  • Upgraded Turbo? Anyone?

Just wanted to know if anyone had upgraded or is thinking about upgrading their turbo chargers?

Any ideas? Previous experiences? I've got about 7 different turbo's in the garage ranging from WRX STi Ball Bearing to T88 Garrett units. I know these might be a bit too BIG but this is my first turbo diesel and I wanted to know if a bigger turbo will help make it go a bit better?

    Re: Upgraded Turbo? Anyone?

The 1kz factory turbo is a ct20 and is tiny... this is for good low down performance and a turbo diesel is a low reving motor. As such a small turbo is not always a bad thing, it gives good low down performance and good throttle response.

By fitting a bigger turbo/High flowing you are most likely going to lose bottom end performance (more lag) and gain at the top end. This is ok on an out and out performance vehicle were peak power is the point, not where in the rev range it is.

For a vehicle like the Prado you are probably going to want a more of road/ street usable power torque curve... good bottom end and midrange... where you do most of your driving.

A slightly bigger turbo may suit your wants (I think a T88 might be to big though ...arn't they good for like 400+ KW :?: ... it'd just come on boost and you'd run out of revs  ) Same with the STI turbo, it must be must be good for 200kw +.

A ball bearing turbo in the same size (as CT20) or slightly bigger would probably be the go if yor really wanted to go this route as ball bearing turbos giving better boost response.

I'd suggest you stick with your current turbo and try a boost controller. Lift the boost a few PSI and see if you are happy with it. Combined with your exhaust and Dtronic you should have a reasonable result.

You can still go the updated turbo route down the track if you're still looking for more.

Just remember the 1kz is a primative engine by todays standards. It can trace it's roots back to the mid/early 1980's. Yes it has EFI but underneath is still a motor that should be running a water pump in a mine not a modern vehicle... it's a reliable chugger not a traffic light racer.

If you do go the turbo replacement route you will certainly have an interesting project on your hands....

reviving one from the dead here.
specs on the toyota turbos are hard to find ,
I know the 1KZ turbo is a CT20 just looking at comparisons with the CT26 and Garrett TO3 as a direct replacement for the CT20.
      Any opinions??

Reviving an old thread here... But I removed the turbo on MUMSRIG yesterday and will be sending it away for a rebuild and Hi Flowing.. Will inform if there are any noticeable differences once it's refitted..

Guys a while back I spoke to Graeme who makes the Gturbos in Perth. Now for the cruiser's I know he has been getting some stupid hp numbers!

He also does an exchange basis on the 1KD-FTV turbos...

Here is an email from him from back in Feb...

              "Hi Chris,

Finally I have some test results - better than expected. No chip/tuning done, just swapped perfect factory turbo for my upgraded factory turbo. On both graphs the bottom lines is the boost - it is slightly higher with my turbo even without tune. Red is factory, green is Gturbo.

More power with same fuel = better economy.

After tuning, even without raising boost pressure, power will rise to 146hp based on te air fuel ratio results - very exciting.

After raising boost pressure and tune to factory air fuel ratios, power will rise to comfortably over 200hp at wheels which was the design design brief.

I hope the dyno is informative - kindly provided by suprised a Qld customer.

              Best regards,

Do you have the Dyno Graph Chris? What is so special about his turbo's to get these gains?

I'm looking forward to the results as I'm in the market for an upgraded intercooler and/or turbo.

I've been looking at these as I'm not sure if the factory intercooler will allow me to get the best from a turbo upgrade. I'm just not sure if it will fit my 90 series. Has anyone fitted one of these?

Bumping this one back to the top. Over the past three years has anyone experimented here? I have just bought a boost gauge and boost controller and will have a little play (within reason). Exhaust will be next then perhaps a chip. I have seen GTurbos but very expensive (around $3500 + tune). Thought I'd poke and see what has proven itself!

                          Cheers

I'd like to give it a go when I find some time. I'm sure there are some easy gains to be had but requires setting up some datalogging etc first up. Probably one mod that is guaranteed is a larger dump pipe to aid spool.
