  • Throttle troubles....

    Hi All,
Im in desperate need of some help, my prado has just started having some issues with the throttle, cruising along with constant throttle it will all of a sudden drop power and i need to push the pedal down harder, that started a few weeks ago but only happened a few times, i thought it was my auto playing silly buggers, but today it happened in a much worse way, cruising up over stockton bridge it lost power, pushed harder down, lost power more and it was like i was barely giving any throttle at all, then the check engine light came on, so after a VERY slow drive up the bridge and down the other side i pulled over and turned the car off and on again, it was all good again throttle very responsive, but it came back after about 30 seconds,, this went on 2-3 times before it just decided to work again and i kept going.

After this i droped by Newcastle Toyota checked the codes on the computer, it came up with 5, 3 relating to ABS( i had no issues with this at all) something else with the airbags and a code 19(2) throttle error...... he said they could book me in for thursday next week... problem is thursday next week i am supposed to be driving the prado up to fraser island.... not happy

Anyway since that little episode this morning its been all good and done several trips (150km worth)without fault, Has anyone else had this issue with there 1kz prado before? im hoping i can sort this one out myself as i would hate to have to delay the trip we have had planned for the last 12 months......

    Thanks,

    Mick.

19 = Accel pedal position sensor or circuit (no signal or out of range)

Place to start is at the pedal - check the plug and loom.

Also if you PM me your Email I can send you a test procedure.

      Hi Mick,
Thanks for the info, looking through the manual you sent still sounds like it might be a pain in the arse to diagnose because of how intermittent it has been so far... very frusturating when its so close to a big trip.

      Thanks,

Intermittent faults are always a PITA

At least you have a starting point.

          Re: Throttle troubles....

Well after some playing around with it and getting the fault to reoccur a few times im fairly certain its the pedal sensor/pedal assembly. I was able to emulate the fault with the check engine and the limited reving but unplugging the pedal for a moment then reconnecting it, though sometimes this doesnt happen but instead just a change in revs/throttle without actualy changing how far ive pressed the accelerator pedal, when this happens i can usualy get it to come good with a few quick stabs of the pedal, this makes me think its definetly something to do with the pedal side of things, not the ECU or loom.

Im going to remove it shortly it looks fairly simple with only 2 bolts holding it in place, has anyone ever removed/replaced one before? any idea if the pedal assy and sensor are all a single unit? any part numbers for the sensor or idea on cost??

          Thanks for the help

With the info Mick sent you did you check the voltages at the sensor? You will need to check the voltages at the ECU plug to eliminate the harness wiring being the problem. These sensors are hall effect and rarely give problems, more likely to be a socket that has had multimeter probes jammed into the tiny connectors and causing an intermittent continuity fault.
Hate to say this but the problem could be the ECU if not the harness or pedal assy.
No idea on cost of a new sensor but I believe it's one unit.

BTW unplugging the sensor with the ign on will give you a DTC code 19

Well i had it checked over by a mechanic today to be sure, he beleives its the pedal assy as well but wouldnt say that with 100% certainty, i got a price from toyota of 770 or from my mechanic for 760.... either way its gunna hurt this close to a big trip.... not happy at all. Anyone know of a wreckers that may have one second hand?
