Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

M 2008 D4D 46,000 km started to show poorer economy. I removed the air flow sensor near the air filter, and gave it a bit of a gentle clean by gently blowing off the minute amount of dust in it and its going much better.

More grunt down low and more km per fill. Currently sitting on 800 km at half full after 100 km of low range work at Abercrombie. Not too bad IMO.

Corigator, you might be on to something. Toyota have it in there schedule to glow the sensor clean every 60 000km.

air flow meters (AFM) are normally located somewhere near the intake pass the air filter. What it does it measures the amount of air flowing into the turbo (if turbo diesel) or straight into the mainfold. The on board computer (ECU) will then assign appropriate amount of fuel/ignition timing etc to make everything work....this is in simple terms.

If you look at your airbox, you'll find some wires hanging off it...or it might be on the rubber tube near the airbox (can't remember) look for wires and you'll find it. Generally these sensors are very fregile so be careful with it. Gentle blowing is fine and so is using an electronic contact cleaner (dick smith have them).

hey guys just reading your comments about poor fuel economy.
l brought my 06 diesel auto its not a d4d with 120 on clock was getting nearly 900km before second tank kicked in and then getting up to 1350 before nearly empty mark on second tank.
l got it serviced and have added a roof rack and snorkel and rack lights now l get 600km then the second tank kicks in and around 1000 at empty on second....
was stressing me out could not loose that much l might have to check the air filter thing would adding a dp chip help manage the fuel consumption better or worse ???
                thanks corallen

Yeah sound like there is something a bit off there cause if i use your figures and base it over 170 litres (casue no matter how empty i run it when i fill up there always seems to be 10 to 15 litres slopping around in there somewhere)

You have gone from 12 to 17 litres per 100k if you went only to 14 i would say welcome to the world of acessories but your jump seems to be to large. Even if you fit a DP chip and get the claimed 10% better fuel economy you are still in the high 15's which seems like a lot
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

Mate i am doing an economy run for you at the moment so you have some comparison. The only other non engine one i can think of if it is a manual are you getting some clutch slippage or something that is causing to rev higher. but to put it in perspective for you i get about 1250k around town and that is with the following

                      Suspension lift
                      second battery
                      BFG 265/65/17
                      ARB bar
Heavy duty racks with bike carriers

I will let you know how i go oh and i do run caltex vortex diesel that seems to get me further but i am more inclinded to think this is beacuse it foams less so i literally get more in the tank before i loose patientce than i used to, rather than fuel quality

                        thanks for that cheste....
yeah l have an auto 4 speed. plus heavy roof rack and mickey atz plus an awning and 4 ipf spotlights on the roof rack.
l use bp fuel and notice it is very foamy tied to trickle fill but impatient people waiting will try it this weekend.
l dont reackon the rack and lights would have lost me nearly 400 km from the 2 tanks l was getting nearly 1400 when l first got it just doing my head so looking for a good merchanic to have a look and maybe a tune...

Also as the micky t are 265/70 /17 is your speedo right or maybe it is out causing the K to read wrong
