    Hi There

This is my first post and i'd just like to say what a fantastic site. Any questions I've had re: my July '06 TD have been answered by spending a bit of time on Pradopoint. However, I have one burning question that I hope a mechanic can help me with. What issues do I need to be aware of changing from 15W-40 (dont know the brand but its what the Toyo dealer uses) to Penrite HPR15 15w50. Are there any points I need to consider/be aware of or can i fill 'er up with the good stuff? I live in Auckland and it does get down to below 0 on the odd occasion javascript:emoticon(':?:')

        Penrite

We've always used Penrite on all our vehicles with great results. Got an excellent mechanic here in Newcastle - Sasch at Adamstown Car Doctors. Have taken (over the past 5 years) a VX SS 6sp Sedan, VY Calais Auto , Rav 4 Cruiser , Mirage, Astra, Hilux D/C SR5 TD, Corolla Sportivo, Peugeot 206, Peugeot 207 TDi, 2 x Prados 120 3lt TD and a VE SS 6sp Ute - and every single one of them has performed better than ever after a service there. Like completely different vehicles.

He put us onto Penrite and we've never looked back. Costs a bomb - but it's worth every cent!

thanks MickL and Mal & Mel

MickL, had a read last night of the link you sent and got my head around it. Anyway, went and bought 10 litres of HPR15 Diesel and a Toyota filter (are they made of gold?). I'll do the change in the weekend and see how she goes.

A quick note to say that I have performed the transfusion and I have to say that the motor is noticeably quieter. 15w50 vs. 15w40? Oil pressure light still goes out just as quick on startup, but it does seem to be running MARGINALLY hotter, or it could be that I am just paying more attention than usual to the temperature gauge. I bought my Prado last month (first diesel vehicle I've owned) with 31000ks on the clock and according to the service book the 30K service had been performed at around 30650ks, yet the oil was BLACK when I changed it at 32500k's. Is this normal for diesel oil? Anyway, its running smoother and quieter and I'm happier

              Snappa,

What engine are you running. The penrite oil website recommends HPR Diesel 5 for the D4D. I went through the recommendation option and selected the Hilux D4D model (the D4D Prado wasn't there) It is a 5W-40 oil. Here is a link to this oil and you can also view the HPR Diesel 15

              Penrite Oils

I am using HPR 5 in mine and it does get slightly dirty after 5000km. I pay around $75-$80 for a 10L container.

yet the oil was BLACK when I changed it

Normal, it's the soot loading that makes it black and is also the reason you have 5k oil change intervel on the 1kz.

                    Hello All,

I've got a 01/2008 D4D and just had it serviced at the local mechanic's (which is not a Toyota dealer - but approved Toyota service agent). I quized them about what type of oil they used - and they have used 'Total' brand "Rubia TIR 7400 CI 15W40" oil and a "Ryco" oil filter. When I looked up the specs of this oil on the net, it doesn't line up exactly with what the service book says (shit! - there is a whole heap of letters and numbers). I don't understand these other numbers and letters. Can someone in the know tell me if this oil and oil filter are 'acceptable'.

I owned a Landrover before the tojo..................never again - this Prado is brilliant  .

                    Ben...

                      Ben,

This is a good bit of reading on oils and filters.

                      http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

There is a good table of oil grades about a third of the way down the page.

I would personally run a Toyota oil filter until the warranty runs out but then they are still resonably priced. I think Toyota also say they may void your warranty if non genuine parts are used, someone else may be able to confirm or deny this.

I would maybe give Toyota a call and query if those parts are acceptable, and won't void any service warranty.

                      Good luck anyway
                      [B]Cheers

                        I agree.

The oil should be ok as long as it meets the grade specified in your hand book (CI 15w-40 so I think it does but it would pay to check)

Thanks for the heads-up. I reckon I'll check with the 'Yota' people.

Recently switched oils, from Castrol RX Super 15w-40w (what the local tojo blokes were putting in) to Penrite HPR5 5w-40w and what a difference it has made. Better starts, especially cold starts. Smoother running, quieter, and fuel economy... was averaging mid 11's now getting 9.6/ltrs.

I'm sold, this oil is brilliant. The engine loves it and I'm thinking of using it for the gearbox at 40k...

I never would have thought a change of oil would make such a noticeable difference.

                              BlackSheep,

                              Do you have a d4d or a 1kt?

I was going to do and oil change with delo which is 15w40. I'm thinking twice about it now.
