I was going to do and oil change with delo which is 15w40. I'm thinking twice about it now.
        I've got a 2007 D4D, 6speed manual GXL

I was talking about this with someone I know, who also owns a Prado, but a 1kdt, and he runs a full synthetic oil (cant recall which one) he suggested that I should use the same oil (HPR5 Diesel) to do the gearbox at the 40K service. I'm wondering if anyone else has done the same or can comment on that one?

        Cheers

          Castrol Tection J-Max

As my Prado is now out of lease I intend to do most servicing. I had made a note about oils (following recommendations from this for another orum) and bought a drum of Castrol Tection J-Max 15W40. There is a note on the drum that this oil is not suitable if API: CF-4 is recommended, as Toyota has listed for the 1KZ-TE engine.

Should I use the Castrol oil?

            Re: Oil brands / types

            Hi all,

It's very simple: follow your car's manual. Oil brand does not make any difference, i.e. if it complies with Toyota recommendations, then it can be used in your car.
Don't follow the oil manufacturer's recommendations and selection tables for a particular car and model-they are here to sell their product. The important thing to remember is: API engine service classification, ACEA requirement and recommended viscosity. Simple.
BTW, I am buying Toyota genuine diesel oil from them and a genuine filter and ask my mechanic to whom I trust to change the oil/filter using parts supplied by me. In that case, I know what is inside of my engine (D4D). If you read the link below, this Penrite oil does not comply exactly with Toyota recommendations for D4D engines even though that Penrite lists this oil as suitable.

            Food for thought.

              Re: Oil brands / types

              Hi Hornet
i've read Penrites product spec sheet. Which part of HPR 5's spec does not meet Toyota's spec? I was of the opinion an "advanced " oil is backward compatible with an "inferior" oil.
I'm currently using HPR5 diesel, are you recommending I should not use it?

                Re: Oil brands / types

                Hi bernie,
As Toyota's manual does not specifically state that the advanced oils are acceptable, then my opinion would be that the requirements should match.
For 1KD-FTV engine the Toyota requirements are: G-DLD-1, API-CF-4, CF or ACEA B1, (you may also use API CE or CD) - page 314 of the manual
Penrite datasheet for HPRD-5: API CI-4/SL, ACEA A3/B4, G-DLD-3/DLD-2. It can be used where A1/B1, A5/B5 and Global DLD-2 are specified in the owner's handbook. So far, only ACEA B1 requirement matches exactly.
However, I must admit that when buying a Toyota diesel oil a couple of days ago, I have noticed that the container was marked as CH-4. On my question that it doesn't match exactly the API CF-4 requirement, the sales person told me it was ok as this oil was more advanced than required. Go figure.
And no, I didn't say that you should not use Penrite oil. I said it does not comply exactly with the handbook recommendations. Maybe you are right and all oils that are more advanced and above of what Toyota is recommending are ok to use. Hopefully someone on this site will shed some light on the issue.
BTW, the Toyo oil only cost me 60 bucks for 2x5L containers, not too bad for a genuine oil.
                Cheers

                  Hi All,

Just had my D4D serviced with my local Toyota Dealer ( where i bought the vehicle) 30k service, done 26k, when i checked oil it was black as if not changed or contaminated with old oil, also log booked recorded klms as 296,366 not 26,890. made a complaint, but not getting any joy, will be changing the way i service my D4D from now on..i do not trust my local dealer at all, plus the crap response from customer service or lack of it.

                    Re: Oil brands / types

An earlier post from Bomber-74 helped me find the answer to a question thanks to his link to carbibles.com

I bought Totoya Genuine Diesel Oil yesterday and the specification on the container is 15W40 - CH-4

When I checked the book in the car it specified CF-4.

The answer for me is in the table below taken from the carbibles site that CH-4 can be used in place of CF-4.

                    Thanks Bomber-74

                    Adrian

PS: for my 2007 D4D the Toyota oil filter part number is: 90915-YZZD2 in case anyone needs it.

                    Diesel Engines

                    Category Status Service

CJ-4 Current Introduced in 2006 for high-speed four-stroke engines. Designed to meet 2007 on-highway exhaust emission standards. CJ-4 oils are compounded for use in all applications with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 500ppm (0.05% by weight). However, use of these oils with greater than 15ppm sulfur fuel may impact exhaust aftertreatment system durability and/or oil drain intervals. CJ-4 oils are effective at sustaining emission control system durability where particulate filters and other advanced aftertreatment systems are used. CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of CF-4, CG-4, CH-4 and CI-4.

CI-4 Current Introduced in 2002 for high-speed four-stroke engines. Designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002. CI-4 oils are formulated to sustain engine durability where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used and are intented for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4 and CH-4

CH-4 Current Introduced in 1998 for high-speed four-stroke engines. CH-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4 and CG-4.

CG-4 Current Introduced in 1995 for high-speed four-stroke engines. CG-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content less than 0.5% weight. CG-4 oil needs to be used for engines meeting 1994 emission standards. Can be used in place of CD, CE and CF-4.

CF-4 Current Introduced in 1990 for high-speed four-stroke naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Can be used in place of CD and CE.

CF-2 Current Introduced in 1994 for severe duty, two stroke motorcycle engines. Can be used in place of CD-II.

CF Current Introduced in 1994 for off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel over 0.5% weight sulphur. Can be used in place of CD.

CE Obsolete Introduced in 1987 for high-speed four-stroke naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Can be used in place of CC and CD.
CD-II Obsolete Introduced in 1987 for two-stroke motorcycle engines.
CD Obsolete Introduced in 1955 for certain naturally aspirated and turbo engines.
CC Obsolete Introduced in 1961 for all diesels.
CB Obsolete Introduced in 1949 for moderate-duty engines.
CA Obsolete Introduced in 1940 for light-duty engines.
