    Turbo Problems (oil in intercooler)

    Hi Mav, and everyone

I THINK? I am in a similar situation to Mav at the moment? I am no mechanic, so I am open to ideas and advice from those more mechanically minded tham me....

I had my Turbo replaced about 15 months ago under warranty, as my 2006 model, 120 series Prado (pre D4D) Turbo Diesel was under-powered and there was a slight whirring noise starting to develop.

Since I had the Turbo replaced I have been going through oil like there is no tomorrow. There are no oil stains on the driveway or obvious leaks but the engine oil light has come on a couple of times and I have had to top up the oil.

I had the car serviced today and mentioned my oil dramas. My local mechanic states there was an "Excessive amount of oil in the intercooler" but he cannot say whether the turbo is faulty again, or maybe the piston rings or stem rings (I think he said?) are leaking?

I headed off to Toyota this afternoon and told them I have been losing heaps of oil since I had the turbo replaced. I showed them my mechanics receipts over the past year showing I have been low on oil a couples of times and questioning a faulty turbo. It is booked in for Friday for a proper diagnosis...

Anyways, like Mav, I am nervously awaiting a determination by my local Toyotal Dealer. As I said, if there are any mechanics out there with a decent opinion please let me know what you think.

I have also noticed oil 'leaking' out of the pipe on the exit of the intercooler however the engine is not using oil but it is a bit of a concern.

I will be curious what they say about the excessive oil in that location.....

              Re: Turbo Problems

Just a few lines cause I am in the middle of some dramas still.

Took vehicle to Toyota Friday and I am told my engine is terminal, with no compression in cylinder 4. They motion me into a quiet area and tell me I need a new engine at $15 000km

I am in complete shock at moment. I believe I have a Warranty case, with first documented problem (underpowered and oil in intercooler) before the 3 years and 100 000km mark - and my local licensed mechanic is prepared to support me and involve Fair Trading if required.

I will advise in due course when I know my position exactly. As this is now apparently not a turbo problem I will find another thread or start one as required when I can comment further.

Hope it goes well there Greg. How simillar is it two the other two (Mav's and Masso's) issues?

EDIT: I just re-read your last comment about it not being a turbo problem

                    Re: Turbo Problems

Not out of the woods, by any means, but after speaking with Dept Fair Trading, and my local licensed mechanic I went back to Toyota today with documentary evidence that my complaints of "poor performance" and excessive oil loss and oil in intercooler goes back to when the car had only done 80,000km.

The Prado is booked in again at Toyota for the engine to be stripped down to find out exactly what is wrong with it - and and "Out of Warranty Consideration" to be made to Toyota Australia.

If Toyota knock it back - I have to foot the bill for the labour undertaken to strip the thing down - but I think this is really my only option.

I am betting now that it is a warranty consideration they will come back to me that it needs new rings, or piston or something and not a brand new complete engine (which would cost me some $15 000 atleast!!)

I am remaining calm, and being open and honest with Dept Fair Trading, and Toyota, and I am hoping I am treated likewise.

Prado goes in 1st November. I have put aside 2 weeks for it to be distmantled and diagnosed..

Damn Simmo, not something I want to hear. A new engine, well tell them to fit a V6 in it mate as the D4D is too much trouble.

                          No Compression

Cannot sleep tonight guys. Tomorrow is the day  Prado goes back to Toyota to fully investigate my lack of compression in cylinder 4

If Toyota accept an "out of warranty consideration" I'll be happy

If they don't I'm up for maybe $15, 000 grand for a new engine

If you never hear from me again, it was the latter

                                Re: Turbo Problems

Have you thought of doing some of the work yourself if toyota dont play ball?

Plenty of people online here to help with dismantling advice.

The only big issue would be if the bore is scored and the engine needs to come out.

Unless you have got it hot and scored everything then you shouldnt need a 'new' engine.

And I wouldnt get Toyota to do it anyway.

                                Good luck.
