Re: Diesel contamination & damage especially on D4D Common R

Hi guys'n'girls, first time poster here.
I have recently purchased an '08 Prado with the 1KD engine.
I work for a Caterpillar dealer and had a customer come in with a brand new Landcruiser. He bought this after destroying the engine in his previous vehicle due to water contamination in the fuel. He was showing me that he had fitted a water seperator which cost him approx $500. Now this filter turned out to be exactly the same as we have fitted to our smaller Caterpillar machines. This also has a 5 micron filter to seperate the water. The cost of these is approx $110 incl. I have now purchased one for my vehicle but have yet to fit it. My customer ordered another three for his other vehicle and a couple of mates. It seems that these are great cheap insurance for contaminated fuel which seems to be a real problem in the common rail engines.
If anyone else is intererested in these please let me know.
I'll post some pics once I get mine fitted too.

    Cheers

      Bazooka

Having just purchased a 2008 D4D I have to admit that fuel contamination has been top of mind for a while.

I will be very interested in your fitting - what make - where can I get it? - and how do I fit it?

      Pictures will be welcome.

Re: Diesel contamination & damage especially on D4D Common R

Ok guys here is the low down on my install.
The picture below shows the Caterpillar water seperator as sold over the shelf.

To install this you will require two blanking plugs with o-rings for two of the four available ports. These can also be purchased through Cat. As for the banjo fitings I had a hard time finding something as I needed 10mm for the Prado where as Cat only supply an 8mm barb. I suppose all the fuel line on what Cat machines these are installed on all have 8mm line.
I found a local company that could supply these. The brand is Bare-co but just make sure you also acquire the appropriate copper washers for fitting as these did not come with.
With the above, a short length of 3/8" fuel line and some hose clamps it took me less than half an hour to install this on my 120 series. The best thing was that the mount holes line up with two of the holes found on the inner guard right beside the factory filter. I did not have to make any special bracket or anything. Just two 8mm bolts are all that's needed.
Below shows the completed install. After a quick bleed using the factory primer pump she fired straight up and have had no issues what so ever.

Since my last post I have now sold another eight of these for various vehicles. So far I have not heard of any problems.
Hopefully this helps others looking for a great high quality product for a fraction of the cost of what I have seen others go for.
If anyone want's let me know and I will post up what part numbers for the above I can. I have all these listed at work so don't have access right now.

          Good luck to all

Hi Bazooka, can you tell us the cat part no. for these? and even a part no. for the blanking plugs would be good. I know caterpillar have part numbers for everything and it will make it easier for ordering. The bonus is I can get cat parts through work cheap

Guys, what's the difference between a water separator with a cartridge, a filter/water separator cartridge and a filter cartridge only with a bowl but no ability to separate water?

Is it the type of media and micron rating?

X 2 interested in fitting up a pre-filter system, and I know CAT gear is generally pretty good quality. Just can't quite make out the part number in the pics because of the glare in the photo.

Was reminded of this thread when I read "What Diesel system is best for common rail".

You will note from earlier in this thread that I fitted a water separator with a warning buzzer. The alarm is set off if any water is detected, which is a handy feature

This was fitted by Gold Coast Diesel and they have updated that model .
The new improved water separator, not only separates the water from the diesel fuel, there is a magnet at the base, this traps the ferromagnetic materials found in contaminated fuel, and also a brass filter to stop the larger particles of dirt.

The filter bowl is made of thick glass and is robust.

The warning buzzer works on the new model.

A photo of fitted filter (pre) is attached.

                      Pricing
                      The DIY kit is $572.00
                      Fitted $895.00
