Lifted, racks, accessories, it says it all about there.

It would be interesting if you removed it all back to standard, I thnk you would find your consumption came right back down.

Are you also running 70 series tyres?

Dude... have you lft the handbrake on??

Team Piggy is right... you have a lot of accessories on your Prado and they each add their bit to increasing consumption. Weight and wind resistance.........

Petrol = was getting 14.8L/100 before ARB bar went on, now constantly 15.8L/100.
I only use the roofracks when going bush. Bloody shopping centre car parks wouldn't let me in

like me, you probly like to pass anything that you catch up to, and pass it using whatever gap you find.. my wife gets really good figures too both in town and on the highway. I think its all about average speed and throttle position.

driving by the scanguage, if i really work at it, i can achieve 2-5L/100kms better than i can if i just drive normally (read fast)

Weds, July 9 2008, fuel at $1.54 per litre in Gosford tonight:

We took our 04 GXL that we have had for a month on its first trip last weekend.

It cost us $140.00 to go from Gosford to The Blue Mountains, drive around up there sight-seeing for two days, drive back home via Lithgow and then drive around Gosford for three days until a refill before the price goes up tomorrow (a Thursday specialty). That was a 90 litre refill after doing 695km. Around 12 to 13l per 100km.

I think that is pretty good value. The service station attendant agreed, seeing it is such a large vehicle.

I have a Territory that would be quite a bit heavier on fuel than that.

              hi,
we just got back from a trip to Bundaberg for a wedding. On return we then stayed week on Fraser Island. We had 3 people and a baby, the car fully loaded - and i mean to the roof - wow so much stuff when taking the 17 month old!
From Sydney to Gold Coast, the Prado got 13.1 ltrs/100kms. Then from gold coast to Bundaberg, Bundy to Maryborough, we saw 12.3 kms/100kms.
Considering the car was full as, am very happy with that.
Here at home around the 'burbs', we get ave about 15-16ltrs/100kms.
PS Fraser Island was magic .... could have stayed longer and the Prado was awesome .. great touring car.
              cheers, Rod

                Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

I have a standard 120 GXL V6, it has roof racks and a tow bar. I just got 12.1/100km out of it over 1268kms.

It makes the oil burners turn red faced ! ops:

Yes it is lifted and yes it has roof racks which I know do not help the fuel equation.

In 18 months of ownership travelling around 20,000kms including 1,000kms of sand driving on Fraser Island where I got 22 litres/100km and 450kms of Vic High Country low range where I managed 29 litres/100kms  , I have had an overall average of between 17-18 litres/100kms. This seems 3-5 litres per 100kms more than what everyone else is achieving. Or with todays fuel prices, is an extra $50 to $80 per 1000kms.

I know the obvious suggestion is going to be the way it's driven, however my wife and myself both achieve similar figures. In comparsion, my VE Berlina work vehicle is driven much less conservative but averages around 11.5 litres/100kms and it travels 100kms a day in Sydney peak hour traffic.

Any suggestions beyond updating with a newer D4D.

                  Cheers - Byrnsie

                  G'day Byrnsie,

A lifted Prado will experience more drag due to the more acute angles that the front CV joints are operating at.

But I think your problem may be more than just the lift. Have you checked your mass air flow sensor in your intake system and your lambda sensors in the exhaust? If either one of these things are working outside their normal range, the ECU may be just running the engine very rich.

But definitely the big lift, big tyres, and extra weight of bull bar, winch, more restriction of snorkel, etc. will really kill the economy.

I have a Discovery Series II V8, and when it was new, economy was around 16 litres per 100 kms in PULP around town. But with the addition of snorkel, bullbar, winch, Kaymar rear bumper bar, cargo barrier, super strong (and super heavy) rock sliders, big tyres, big lift, etc. my fuel consumption is a whopper 21-22 litres per 100 kms on PULP. On LPG this climbs up to around 24-25 litres per 100 kms.

But she goes everywhere, so I guess that's the trade off with all these mods. ops:

I'm glad that it's just a play machine - I am blessed with a stock standard station wagon that is far more environmentally friendly for daily driving.

                    Don't buy a D4D, keep the V6, much better !

Oil burners will face a 30 cents disparity with petrol very soon !

Prior to the last fill I cleaned the Air Flow Sensor (It was very dirty!) and added some Injector Cleaner to the tank prior to filling with BP Ultimate. Almost got a 1,000 kms to the tank :P . Filled up with 168.5 litres and returned consumption of 18.83litres/100km. This was an improvement of 1litre/100kms from the previous tank. I am thinking that this is probably going to be as good as it gets for suburban stop start driving.

Also pretty concerned with the consumption rate of the Cooper STTs. Think I might buy another set of rims and put the highways back on for suburban duties. This will probably assist fuel comsumption as well.

BTW - What is a lambda sensor?
                      Where is it?
                      What does it look like?
                      How do I access it?
How do I check what range it is running?
                      How do I clean it?
                      etc etc

                      Cheers - Byrnsie

Lambda sensor is the official name for the oxygen sensor.

This resides in the exhaust system to measure the amount of oxygen that is left in the combusted gases that come out of the engine.

The ECU looks at the O2 levels in the exhaust and works out what the best fuelling mixture is.

You'll need to take your vehicle to a workshop that has an OBDII computer that can do live readings from the ECU. If the O2 sensors seem to be responding outside the specified parameters that Toyota consider to be "normal", then they may need to be replaced.

I don't know what Toyota has in the way of diagnostic equipment, but with Land Rovers where I have more experience with, the Land Rover "test book" is able to take live readings and can indicate whether the lambda sensors are working properly (or not).

You pretty well say it all in your comments,

Lift / STT's and racks. That about 3-4 litres per 100 there alone.

Bet if you whipped the racks off and put highways back on it would drop a bit, the lift will still add some but.

                            Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

I recently started towing a caravan and found that i get better consumption (21 litres per 100 ) if i keep the trans in 4Th (v6 petrol 5 speed auto) the van is approx 2200 kgs.
i am happy with this figure but has anyone found the same or better

This year did an 8 week trip towing an 18ft pop top van. Weight approx 2t. Did 8,500 km & this would involve towing for around 6,000 km. Mine is petrol & average consumption was 16.6 km per 100 km. Very happy with this figure as we did some low range 4WDriving as well,

                                Strinco,

The wind-up camper we tow is a bit lighter than that but occasionly find using 4th is both more economical and smoother. In the right conditions it wants to jump back and forth between 4th and 5th which is when I flip the stick across so it holds 4th. Going slow (under 70kph) restricting it to 4th also seems better.

                                Nige.
