That backs up a very good article I read in the 2008 Annual issue of Australian 4WD Action. The article is titled "Grubby Thoughts" and describes the disassembly of an old gearbox by Roothy.

It was the clearest presentation of the internals of a gearbox that I've read. It clearly demonstrates why the 1:1 gear is best for towing. In 5sp Prado 120 Auto, the 1:1 gear is 4th; in the 6sp manual it is 5th. Basically, one less gear than the overdrive gear.

So there we have it... theory and practice coming together.

    Cheers,
    LFaR.

      Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

      Hi Guys,

I have a 2005 V6 Auto. I've changed my air filter to a uni filter. Recently I achieved 11.2 Lt/100 Klms from Sydney to Brisbane which is great going for a petrol. I'm about to put pacemaker headers on and later a snorkel so I would expect to be around 10Ltr/100 klms once all these last 2 are done.

      Cheers

        Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

Last weekend we towed the caravan to the Mudjimba caravan park on the Sunshine Coast and spent a very relaxing 2 days. The round trip totaled 213 kms for a fuel usage of 14.9 L/100kms. I sat on 90kph most of the way up and back and I think this was the reason for the great fuel economy.

          V6 consumption in sand

I am planning a tag-a-long tour of the Canning Stock Route in 2009. What I would like is an indication of the fuel consumption of a fully loaded V6 in sand dunes like the Canning, Simpson, Fraser Island etc. so I have some real world idea of fuel use. Thanks, Neil

Last night we got home from a return trip to Surfers Paradise from Kellyville and a little driving around up there (total 1780km) and we got 11.6l per hundred. We had 2 adults and 2 kids plus xmas pressies and luggage etc. Car had less than 700km when we left home. I drove it like a baby and the missus.... well she does not know the meaning of economy
From memory :? it was around 860km before the 90L light came on.

I've had a V6 for 18 Months and average 12.5 to 12.8 Lt per 100 Km's. A friend of mine bought a D4 and is really pissed with 1) The pick up 2) the current price of diesel.

I've had my V6 5 speed auto for almost 4 years. No mods, just cooper atrs.
Around town, Sydney metro, with the other half giviing it the beans all the time, it's always averaged 17lt to 18 lt per 100kms.
On a recent trip it did 11.48 lt per 100 kms. This was a 1564 km round trip to Coolabah with a couple of side trips whilst out there.

Bet if you whipped the racks off and put highways back on it would drop a bit, the lift will still add some but.

Hmm yes my rack adds about 4-5 ! on its own, it amazes me how it can make such a difference ! With roof rack on im doing about 18-19 on the highway  .

                            Don't buy a D4D, keep the V6, much better !

Oil burners will face a 30 cents disparity with petrol very soon !

Having just bought a V6 i am very interested to read the above comments on economy.

Regarding the quote above I saw Diesel cheaper than petrol on Thursday! 117.1c vs 118.1c for Regular Unleaded!!!

                            That makes a first.

                              Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

Someone said don't go the diesel. My July 2007 D4D returned this in a recent trip Sydney to Melbourne and back, towing a 2 tonne offroad van plus car loaded to the hilt:

Normal Highway without the van at 110 kph 10l/100k
Normal Highway with the van at 90-100kph 13.2
Mountain dirt logging roads with van, about 40 kph, 60kph max 14.2
Very steep firetrails, powerline access tracks, low range 17.5

Diesel has its place, but probably not on a V6 petrol thread. Sorry. Won't happen again

True, there's not much truck-passing going on - unless you count them passing me

Though my van (Kimberley Karavan) is very stable, I don't like pushing it much beyond 90-100kph indicated, which is 85-95 GPS. Trucks on a schedule don't hang about at those speeds.

Otherwise, it's pretty darn good, IMO. I like the range I have, even in tough conditions with 2 tonnes hanging off the back.
