G'day Guys,

Updated figrues. Last weekend i did a run to Nagambie from Melbourne, towing the boat 2100kg (no camping gear), 5 people, and my roof rack still on.

I got to 24.8L/100 on LPG cruising at 100kph and easing off up big hills.

Just out of curiosity, could it be a particular brand of LPG system that is returning figures that high.

Can we get an idea of what systems people have in their vehicles.

I have the Lardirenzo omegas system installed by LPGAS1 in Lilydale and getting around 25lt p/100.

What have others got?

I have Icom JTG liquid injection.

You must remember fuel in equils horsepower out if you use the power you have it will cost you in fuel.

In my case, I have a lot of load on, the roof tent creates windage, the boat weighs north of 2000kg, I have probably 150kg of accesories in the car,5 people and traveling at 100kph.

My old 94 XR8 on the same trip traveling slower used around the 30L/100 mark. It was a carburettor system. However on the freeway on its own it would retun 13l/100.

My Uncle's 90 series diesel with a similar load is somewhere around the 15L/100 mark traveling slower.

I am yet to do a run with the car on its own, i will be doing it in snow season, i would hope to be down around 14L/100 with just the car.

Hi Guys,
An update from me. Have bought a new van weighs 2.3 tonne loaded. Towing at 90-95 on highway is averaging 19-21 l/100. have definately discovered to tow in 4th not 5th. The transmission fluid temperature rises too high and even though the revs are lower it is cooking the gears. The slightly higher revs (2300rpm) in 4th @ 95 kph is not using any more fuel but the trans temp is perfectly normal. It is virtually a 1;1 ratio. You will use more fuel towing in 5th and I reckon you will definately damage the gearbox overtime and start to lose gears etc. Just my 2 bobs worth.

I tow a 4.5m open tinny about 700kg all up inc trailer, I return an average of 19L/100 on the hwy....around town about 26 owch. Normally I'd get about 13.2L/100 without the trailer on the hwy and ~18 around town

just came back from a trip to cameron corner and flinders ranges, towing a 7x5 trailer with all camp gear plus a
roof rack with tent and spare . about 3000 km all up . filled up at peterborough and on the run back through broken hill
managed 20lt per 100 . ouch ! we did push it a little . from what i see here it appears a little on the high side.

hi there , i do a lot of trailer towing and generally sit on 100km/h at about 2000 rpm . unless i am on an up hill run where the rev's increase a little. I wasn't aware of the trans temp issue as i have no guage. thanks for the advice ,will try 4th next trip

Hi everyone,

When I first got my V6 GXL Prado, I drove from Sydney to Melbourne and back. Each way was 802km. I left Sydney with it fully fueled. I arrived at Mobil just 10 minutes out from Sunshine and only used 1 tank (90L). That was with 3 passengers and a fully loaded boot (with the backseats still in). The 90L light came on just as I turned the car off. Awesome fuel economy for a V6. Effortless drive too.

I towed my Jayco Swan camper from Melbourne to Bright and back on the long weekend. Cruising at 95km/h I achieved 15.1 l/100km from my 2003 GXL 4 speed auto.

I was taking it easy, using cruise control on the flat in drive, using 3rd to get over the hills. Car was carry 2 adults, 2 kids and a bit of luggage. Camper would weigh in around 1.3 tonne. I'm running BFG all terrains with some long Rhino heavy duty aero bars on the roof (empty). Although I have LPG fitted, I only used premium 98 octane petrol on this run. Also, there was very little wind.

I'm about to add a bullbar, snorkel, dual battery, cargo barrier and 50mm lift, so it will be interesting to see what impact all that has.

Just recorded my worst fuel consumption ever.... 28/100!!

For the record, everything was against me:

1. Towing 2300kg boat in 5th gear
2. Howling head wind all the way
3. Determined to sit on 100kph (cruise on)
4. 265/70/17 rubber
5. Roof rack (empty)
6. Overtaking caravans doing 75 regularly

Mine is an '05 6 speed with 70,000 on the clock.

Time for supercharger mate, you won't even notice the boat on the back and your fuel consumption will be more like 18/100

Hi guys, I have a v6 2008 GXL with Unichip and Pacemaker extractors... otherwise mostly standard except for sovereign bar, cargo barrier, engel etc. This is a blacktop tourer I mainly use to pull a 2,000kg van. I recently did a 6,000 km trip Perth to the Barossa and return, and average fuel burn was 17.2 lt/100km (total average, van on and van off). I towed in 4th gear at 95km (GPS), and drove to fuel economy, eng temp and trans oil temp data as displayed by the Scangauge. In 4th gear the motor and trans ran cooler, fuel burn was more favourable and the motor was coasting rather than stressing (as it would be if I was in 5th gear and in/out of overdrive). Overall a hassle free trip that came in under budget.

I posted this in the diesel section, but also relevant to this one due to my conclusion i guess...

Have recently completed the annual 5250km round trip Kal-Pilbara-Kimberly-Pilbara-Gascoyne-Kal. 100km/h on the bitumen, lots of slow dirt roads with ++dips, sand, beach etc. 2007 GXL D4D with Dueller AT 695s, pod, awning, maxtrax on roof, 2 adults 2 children towing 1250kg camper. 14l/100km average.

Did exactly the same trip last year in 2006 GXL 4.0l V6 petrol with the same gear. Wind profile and weight would have been identical. 19l/100km average.

Interesting back of fag packet equation. If you buy a fairly standard 2008 GXL D4D with ~100-150,000km privately, you'll pay ~$40k. The same vehicle in the petrol variant, also privately, will cost you ~$32k tops.

Ignoring servicing costs, and assuming a consistent ratio of diesel : petrol consumption towing v. not towing at Perth's current metro prices ($1.50 diesel, $1.40 ULP), you would have to drive >135,000km in the diesel to realise any savings on fuel over the petrol. By which time you've got a >250,000km vehicle. (The ratio is consistent from our fleet data, we have 6yrs of 1KD v. 1GR data).

That's a long way. And the petrol is for me a much nicer drive....
