  • Engine life

    Hi all
What kind of life can you expect from the 4 Litre V6 in the GRJ120R if it well maintained?
I am considering purchasing a high KM GRJ120R (Around the 300K mark)

I am hoping that a few of you have had experience with high K engines.

Has anyone priced a replacement engine or an engine rebuild?

    Thanks

Hi snyper, imo, there would be a lot more things to consider than just the engine. Gear boxs, diffs, suspension, electrical bits and pieces, seats, air conditioner. Then there is the depreciation factor ... very hard to sell a high k car, even if it is in good nik. Another factor, highway ks are much much more gentle on a vehicle than city driving. my 1 cent worth.

Hope it works out for you. And by the way, do you mind mentioning the sort of money the seller is asking?
    Cheers

If I remember correctly the factory service manual description section about the 1GR says that the cylinder sleeves are not replaceable because of the way they are cast into the alloy block. That suggests it may be a throwaway item but then maybe manufacturers say that about all alloy blocks. It might be worthwhile pricing a new long motor from Toyota as a guide and comparing that to a rebuild price if anyone does actually do that.

Bear - I did not want to cross post, but I am also very interested in the lifespan of all of the running gear, Price wise it is in the very low $20k mark

quadcam - Will ring Toyota today and get an idea on the price of a new 1GR long motor.

Team Piggy - location is now in my profile.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Mate, that's sounds like a seriously low price for a 120 series - guess it reflects the high k's, but also reduces the depreciation risk to you, imo. Have you considered paying the Toyota mechanics to give it a thorough check over. They might tell you the sort of things that could or might prove a problem.

            Cheers

Just priced a partial engine from Toyota, just short of $13K not including GST...

Holy Cr*p! Did they offer to buy you dinner first?
$13k plus gst plus low 20's for the car must make it much less appealling
If you shop around the cheaper cars are out there, just need to act straight away.
We paid $36k for a silver 2005 VX petrol with uhf, sovereign bar, tow bar and mats. Had 90,000 km on the clock and minimal offroad, end of his lease and just wanted to do better than trade in offered on his new car (a 2008 vx, same colour, god love him)

Give it a few more months (of petrol price increases), and Toyo probably wont be able to GIVE away petrol motors!

Petrol price increases... Diesel isn't too appealing either at the moment. Upto 30c more at some outlets.!
Anyways..thats not what this thread is about, in my opinion if its mostly 300k worth of highway/country driving and its been looked after it should last a lot longer yet. However, with that amount of use things can start to require a bit of attention. Starter motors, air cond compressors, radiators, shocks, the list goes on.! The other option if something did go bang, I'm sure there would be a few wrecks around with perfect reasonably low km engines, you wouldn't need to pay $13k for a new motor.
But as long as it's been looked after I wouldn't mind betting the engine itself would last a long time yet. It is Japanese..it is Toyota.. if it were anything else I would say don't bother. 8) My 3 cents :P

You can have my engine complete with car (03 GXL manual, 69k) for $30k if you want unless I can get more as a trade-in.

My 1986 (4 cylinder) Volvo 240GL did 650,000km and then I gave it to my son who got sick of it after two years and after minor refit (no engine issues) we passed it on to a guy in Gympie so it is around 750K now. If the V6 prado can't do at least half that I would be very unhappy

Hey all I am fairly new to this forum but I manage a fleet of vehicles and in it we have 6 Toyota Hilux with the 1GR engine and all have reasonably regular maintenance, my 2007 dual cab 4x2 is the lowest mileage with 265000k next up 300,000 and the others range from 500,000k up to a 2008 that has just had a 650,000k service. none of these engines have even had a rocker cover lifted so I have no doubt to the durability of the engine with regular maintenance, one of the hilux's had a torque converter seal leak and a couple of them had alternator bearings replaced but I am sure all are still on the original water pumps as well.
In my opinion a fantastic power plant!
                            Cheers Rick.
