  • Re: LPG Conversions

this comes from the cylinder install manual for my liquid injection install. 2004 prado (late 2004 with 5 speed box)

    Petrol Gauge Wiring Modification

    1. Cut off wiring from sub tank. Install 50 ohm resistor between brown and yel/black wires and insulate.

    2. Join the two white/black wires (next to each other) and insulate.

    3. connect the remaining white/black (between the brown and yel/black to ground (earth).

90l light will always be on and fuel gauge works only from front tank.

If i ever pull the dash out i will get rid of the 90l light aswell.

Thought it might be time for a performance update.

It is now a bit more than a year and around 25ks since the tech guy from Sprintgas checked out our system and replaced 3 "faulty" injectors. There was, and continues to be, a marked improvement. Power and acceleration etc is very similar, gas/petrol. Consumption on gas is still a bit higher than some are getting but no where near as high as it was: consistently 20l/100k up and down the range and round town. Combination of twisting country roads and highway @ 105 - 110k we average 16l/100k or a bit better. For comparison purposes, but also to give the petrol injectors a good workout, I'm currently running on just petrol - all town and range driving.

        Hi Bear
I thought by now I would have a new D4D (but the price..Wow!!!!...)but the old girl is still as good as it was when it was new apart from a few scratches...my fuel consumption is still very ordinary to say the least...highway or around town not much difference, struggling to get 280 to 300 out of a usable 64 litres and with Diesel at $1.42....petrol at $1.49. and wait for it.............$1.10. litre for gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Diesel is the only way to go in Broome.....but the good news is I was offered $40.000 as a trade in!!!!! Tempting but to replace the Grande for a Kakudu is a bit out of my league just now
        happy motoring

G'day Stevo, I see you are still in Broome! What was it you were saying early last year ... you decided to "stay awhile" in Broome? Seems like you've really settled in . I've seen some stunning photos of Broome. Sound like a great place ... providing you survive the odd cyclone that rip through your area. We've not been to Broome; never been further west than Port Augusta in SA - hope to rectify this sometime.

Back to LPG. Prices have risen over here too but it is still around half the price of unleaded. 60c v $1:20 ULP v $1:25 Diesel.

          Cheers

Broome is a place that everyone should visit, great 4wdriving with endless unrestricted beaches to drive on, massive tides and good fishing, just an expensive place to live though
I don't want to turn this into a tourist info blog so I had better get off....more fuel stories to come as I explore the rest of the Kimberley's soon
            cheers Stevo

Ok so gas is cheap, currently 39 cents in Melbourne that will increase as I travel.
Total fuel carrying capacity for me is 87 litres petrol and 63 litres gas total 150 litres and towing will only give me a range of 576 kms!! thats at an average of 26 litres per 100(petrol and gas) So having lost 30 litres of Petrol by having the rear tank removed and weighing up the cost of the conversion and now realising that a lot of remote Service stations do not stock gas I wish I had not done the conversion.
I'm sure a lot of you are very happy with running on gas but based on my personal opinion and I know I might get attacked here, Turbo Diesel is probably the only way to go.
I will listen to any advice on this subject, driving habits, mechanical issues etc but I must admit sitting on 90 kph is going to be very frustrating.

                hi Guys
I think you Guys are looking in the wrong direction, you should be looking at the $ / 100 klms, not the litrs / 100 klms. I have taken the plunge to LPG and have a saving in the cost of driving. We did a trip from Glenbrook NSW to Glenbrook NSW via QLD, NT, WA,SA and VIC towing a 2000 kg Caravan. The average was $25 / 100 KLMS for some 30,000 Klms ouch that hurt. When we returned to Glenbrook I thought it has to be a cheaper way and it is not the Deisel way. IF i would have chosen LPG before i left i would have saved the cost of conversion and had a average of aprox $10 / 100klms. I have now been getting driving in the Town of Penrith $7 / 100 klms before we go on our winter trip to QLD. I have added a valve lub package to help with keep the  away.
WE leave on Frid to travel to Cook town and return in Dec 2010
                Cheers SNAILBAIT

                  hi,
i have the new liquid injection system to my prado..i have had it
for almost ayear now.....it runs superb (apart from some tetthing problems in the
beginning). I hane a 65 litre tank withh useable of 58 litres..
                  with petrol i get 360km's from 58litres. it costs $21.75 per 100 kms. (98 octane at $1.35)
with gas i get 285km from 58litres.it costs $11 per 100kms. (gas at 58cents per litre)
now that is a big saving.......and on the freeway is even better........

                    Hi,

I have LPG fitted to my prado and obviously no main petrol tank, i was just wondering if anyone could help me with the amount of fuel the secondry tank should be able to hold, mine holds bout 60 litres, and it only ever registers as half full on the fuel guage.

I thought the tanks were both 90 litres but now im starting to think there not.

Unless it still has 30 litres left in there even after the fuel light comes on, just that the fuel guage isn't working properly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

                    Cheers Rhys

G'day, not sure of the exact capacity, but mine has taken around 80 to fill. 87 sounds about right.

Rhys, if you read through this thread you will find a lot of problems with fuel gauges after conversions.

                        Cheers

Just a quick update for all those LPG conversions suffering from Fuel Gauge issues.
I have had problems getting mine to work since installation (3 yrs now). The gauge does the usual 1/2 full = FULL and is accurate but moves very slowly to empty and down to the fuel warning light which always worked.

Im happy to say that its now FIXED!

I followed the instructions a few posts back regarding the wiring - Tested and no effect. I double checked and all was correct so as nothing had changed and the gauge was still working accurately, but incorrectly as per above... I just left it all wired up the new way.

Over the Christmas period - I thought I had better purchase a new battery to replace the 4 year old one I had. (Huge effort from a battery I know). Anyway, obviously disconnecting the battery and resetting the computer is all that was required. The new wiring - which had been that way for about 6 months has now produced a working fuel gauge. The 90L light is on and all is working as it should.

Those still having trouble - follow the instructions from majama and then disconnect the battery.

Haven't posted in this thread for a couple of years or so. Another 2 years, about 40,000km further, lots of heavy caravan towing and my Easyjet system is running like a dream. Getting around 14 litres/100 km up and down the freeway and also around town. Best of all no check engine light and fuel guage is working as it should. This system which cost $4,500 but me only $1,500 after rebates has paid for itself time and again. Happy days

Fuel gauge works here too. Was 1/2 = full

Did wiring and got mechanic to check as was not working. He checked and said should be OK (no charge) then that night unplugged battery for a few hours and it now works fine.

Thanks for all the great advise.
