I had after market fitted to the old 95 series by windscreen obriens and was better then the factory one, was tinted plus also had the dark band accross the top, there all laminated and wouldnt be surprised if there all made by pilkiton glass anyway ?? (except when originally from Japan) The only thing I did at the same time was replace the rubber seal that went around mine as the old one started looking a bit shabby but I bought genuine for that as I dont like the one they use, not moulded correctly and end up lifting in the corners but that was on the 95 series, looks like the one on the 120 series only runs across the top of the screen not down the sides. The sides are covered with the bigger plastic bits. Just make sure when they cut the old one out that they dont cut through the paint where they put the sikaflex, otherwise you will end up with rust, if they happen to do it they do have some stuff they put on the bare metal, but possibly if your not watching they might not bother with it. Nothing worse then some one watching over your shoulder while working but after some of the bodgy stuff I have had done I dont care, Ill watch from start to finish to make sure its write, shame I wont be able to do that when they replace the brackets on the bullbar as your not allowed in toyota workshops OH&s issues..Dont have glass insurance on your policy do you ?? wont cost you a cent if you do Regards Steve

I had one replaced recently. It is a little noisier (You hear the engine a little more) but you soon get used to it.

The laminating is nowhere near as clear.

Look side on through an aftermarket one and all you see is ripples. Factory = clear as.

$300 fitted v's $1100 and the fact I break at least one per year = aftermarket for me everytime.

My first Prado, 2005 model, the factory windscreen was absolutely crap. I only had to look at it and it would scratch, i actually wondered whether it was even glass it was that soft, i thought maybe they had gone plastic windscreens. Anyway before i hassled toyota about it a truck chucked up a rock and cracked it. The after market replacement was much better.

No problems with my current 2009 model though, other than the small crack from some tosser chucking up stones as he passed me at 100MPH travelling up the Cape :evil:

Same! Noticed slight rippling when looking at acute angle but for under 300 bucks fitted, aftermarket's a winner for me.

Yep there was a thread about a year ago that covered this. Apparently the diesel ones are a bit thicker for noise insulation.

In Melbourne national windscreens $180 fitted. Looks the same quality as obrians but does not have blue dimming at the top.

Yep there was a thread about a year ago that covered this. Apparently the diesel ones are a bit thicker for noise insulation.

No. the diesel and petrol windscreens are exactly the same. The cost of tooling and production of different windscreens for different engine fits (for just a windscreen) would be prohibitive.

Some aftermarket glass manufacturers are better than others. There used to be at least one "aftermarket" manufacturer in Oz that also made OEM glass for all the big manufacturers. In fact, that manufacturer has been in business for almost two hundred years (before cars) and pioneered (and patented) some great advances in both automotive and domestic glass production. All automotive glass in the world uses glass made by one of these creations (float glass).

All autoglass sold in Oz has to meet the applicable standard. Generally, the only differences you'll find are long-term, such as the tendency to de-laminate (one QLD manufacturer was famous for this in the 80's). Or for glass to go "milky" around the edge - caused by moisture ingress via the interlayer.

Hi All,

I had my Windscreen replaced on my 08' Model D4D only about 5 weeks ago.
O'Briens did mine and I was told that with them, you loose the Original Toyota Seal, that goes around the Windscreen.

O'Briens don't replace the seal at all, instead they just apply a thickish corking compound to stick the windscreen to the Body.

I have noted that since fitting that the Vehicle Fogs up quicker that before from the bottom, which means I am always having to
turn on & off the Front Demister.

As for $$$, O'Briens was about $600 fitted for memory.

Hi Stuart, not sure if you have the option or not but check if your insurance does glass breakage covering any window in your car. I have it on my wifes car and my prado, roughly $70 added to the comprehensive insurance policy, well worth it. I have used it twice now on both cars. both repairs done by windscreen Obriens no issues. Regards Steve

As my insurance is done by my Father (as he does all our Private Family vehicles and House) through a Broker, I was told that option wasn't taken up by us,
for some strange reason, as he normally has it included in all our policies.

Hello 120 series D4D owners.

Did you know that your D4D Prado has a special noise-reducing windscreen? Most auto glass replacement people don't.

The genuineToyota part number for a standard windscreen for a petrol 120 series built around June 2007 is 5611160471, priced at $860.00

The noise cancelling one for the D4D is 5611160650, priced at $950.00.

I just had my windscreen replaced a few days ago. One of my mates, a D4D owner, contacted me. He was getting quotes for a replacement windscreen from the same people I used. They didn't know about the two screens and refused to believe him when he told them. He obtained the part numbers from Toyota and told the glass people. After a long period of silence they called him back and said he was right.

So now you know.

How many D4D Prados have had the wrong replacement windscreens fitted?

I've just had mine replaced. I asked for a genuine Toyota part but was never asked whether it was for a diesel or petrol Prado, or for a VIN which determines the requirement. My insurance company paid $860.00 - the wrong price for the windscreen appropriate for my D4D Prado.

I can feel a fight coming on ...
