OK, looks like there is no reason not to do this, so the project can begin....

Just need to finish fitting the compressor this morning.

Ever since the Rathdowney Condamine Trip where we were nearly undone by a big tree across the track (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...t-23rd-October)

I've carried one of these highlimb, human powered chainsaws. No fumes, no fuel required (apart from maybe a chocolate bar or two for energy). Surprisingly effective and stores away in a small space.

If you go camping when you 4WD like us, you need your chainsaw every day, to cut timber for fire. Our small Stilh fits easily in the back of the Prado, together with fuel and oil in containers that do not leak or smell. Pulling it apart every day would be tiresome.

Absolutely agree mate. We've had trees in our paths to our usual fishing hole after the Victorian floods too. Cleared them out with a chainsaw and dumped the wood on the side. About a month later we came back with some rope and towed it all back to camp for a niceeeee fire - scratch that - BONFIRE was good given that fog had built up over the river and it was a chilly 3 degrees.

We use it every trip for fire wood. There are heaps of fallen trees to cut up and especially being in winter now, fire is key to comfort...

Seems like a good idea to fit it in the under bonnet space, for occasional use.. You'd need to cushion it with some rubber matting or similar and strap it down well.
However I think you'll find that fitting the bar and chain every time you want to use it, than dismantling it again, will quickly become a pain in the proverbial. I've got a Stihl with the quick fit bar and chain and still carry it with them fitted. I carry my saw ( bar and chain fitted ) in an aluminium tool box on the roofrack, that also stores the PPE, fuel can, chain oil, chain tools etc - gets rid of the fuel smell in the vehicle.
However if you only intent to use the saw very occasionally it may work for you.
                  Cheers, Wayne

Been rethinking this plan and I reckon the chainsaw will now go on the roof basket in it's own case with the fuel, oil etc.
But there is still good space that my recovery bag can be stored in and easily strapped down.
Will work on this job on the weekend.

Started looking for a small saw and have found that Husqvanna & Stilhl both have specials on at the moment.

Similar chainsaws, suitable for light firewood cutting, both selling for $299.

I have noticed the empty space for a second battery quickly catches a lot of sand and dust. A recent trip along the Milmed Track in the Wyperfeld NP saw about 1cm of sand build up in that area. Might need to consider sealing the chainsaw well to avoid dust / sand ingress.

i brought a water proof (i assume oil proof from the inside) soft zip up bag on ebay for about $40. I get my Stihl, 2stoke, Helmet, Googles and Gloves all in the bag. That might work!

I have ended up putting my recovery gear which is in a heavy canvas bag into this spot.
It fits perfectly and doesn't move at all.

The new chainsaw will probably find itself in its own case on the roofrack along with the other bits and pieces.

Pictures to follow when I do my buildup.
