In any other car i have owned and sometimes the prado i can be doing 100-105 on the highway then pass through a town at 60 then hit resume and away we go. :?
No this is when the cruise is active...i.e it is on, but the hill is too steep or your load too much & you loose speed. If you get down to 16km/h below your set speed the cruise will turn off & the set speed will be forgotten!

    Trust me, I have a 1kzte, I know!

Sorry i didn't take it as your explanation suggests.

Stormy is correct Addy, I will try to explain it a little better.

If the cruise is on and set at 100 km/h and you start climbing a hill with cruise on, the speed will start to fall off when the cruise is unable to compensate for the increase load on the engine. Once the speed has dropped by more than 16 km/h from the set speed of 100 km/h ie you have gone down to 84 km/h the cruise will disengauge and the set speed will be erased from the cruise control memory.

If for some reason you have a set speed between 40 and 55 km/h and the car loses speed by going up a hill then when it gets to 40 it will disengauge the cruise control and it will erase the set speed in memory so that the resume function cannot be used once the speed is back over 40 km/h.

For some strange reason Toyota have decided that the Prado's cruise control will never retain the set speed if it goes below 40 km/hr.

Hope that clarifies things a bit.

Setting your speed on the highway then braking and going down to town speed will not erase the set speed from the memory and you should be able to resume your previous highway set speed once out of the town limits again.

      Cheers

Re: Loss of cruise contol when engaged

From another vehicle we own, I know the cruise will drop out when it is unable to maintain the cruising-speed. I believe that is standard behaviour. I discovered that whilst climbing a rather steep hill. Normally, a driver will give it a squirt with the right-foot when they see a steep hill coming to build up the necessary momentum. Of course, the cruise-control doesn't behave in such a proactive manner. By the time it senses the speed is dropping and it reacts, it's too late.

These days, if I have cruise engaged, I provide the proactive input it needs to get it up the hill without a struggle.

I have not experienced this on the D4D yet.

I havent noticed this in my D4D yet, nor do I have the cruise control violence that many others have complained about - My CC is pretty docile. I did however previously own a petrol Pajero and the cruise control did drop out if the set speed could not be maintained in either O/D or 4th gears - Really annoying. Guess the additional torque of the D4D just keeps it chugging up the hills. Love my truck!!!

How do we define "dropping out"? When I stop at lights, the green cruise light starts flashing. In order to resume the cruise I first have to turn the cruise off totally by pressing the little button on the end of the cruise stick; then press it again to turn the cruise back on; then reset.

I've read the thread so I understand why the cruise drops out, but I'd be interested to know if others experience this "flashing green cruise light" phenomenon when the cruise loses its memory?

No mine does not flash it just stays green but I lose the set speed in memory.

Thought that might be the case. Hmmm, I first noticed the "flashing" a day or two after the battery had been unplugged for a bit - have a sneaking suspicion that might have something to do with it. I'll go and have a bit of a rummage through the "electrical" threads and see what can be found.

Anyone else had this problem :?: :?: :?:

Ours does the same it took me a while to work this one out, Toyota claim that the trailer must have an electrical fault yet on a BA falcon a Camry and a petrol Prado a commodore a magna oh and a Subaru. most with cruise control no problems with the cruise. Its a right royal pita. I have since tried other trailers and they too must have an electrical problem.

I have read a Toyota bulletine in the Prado manual that admitts there is a problem with the cruise control and that they have now fixed it. Well this was written prior to me buying mine in 07 and yet the problem of the CC not remembering the set speed still remains. It is without a doubt the worst CC I have ever had the misfortune to use. :x

I would seriously like to know if there is an aftermarket control module that could be swapped in to replace the Toyota control module cause I would do it in a heart beat.

There is a post somewhere about having the engine management "chipped" transfomed not only the engine performance but also the cruise control as well.

Can we get a software upgrade for our older Prados?

It's funny because I don't have the problems that some of you are reffering to. Perhaps because mine is a 08 model? I can quite happily go from 100 crusing speed, hit a 60 zone and then when I work my speed back up to a stage when I normally shove it into 6th, then I can resume the speed already set in the cruise control. The only time it resets is when I go below 40. I cannot complain about my cruise.

This is precisely the 'feature' that annoys me and I hope that Toyota correct it someday soon. Having driven many many different varieties of vehicles, this is the only vehicle I've driven that suffers from amnesia when the speed drops below 40. It's very ordinary.
