  • Belt slipping and squeeling like pig

Well since its started to warm up here a bit we put the AC on for the first time in a while and the thing squeeled like a pig.
I popped the bonnet and could see the belt slipping on the AC compressor pulley.

I guess my question is, should I just replace the belt or can the tension be tightened to stop it?

When I had my 2005 Prado with the 1kz; the air-con belt was always a source of annoyance, it started slipping at 10,000k and I always seemed to need to tighten it a lot more than I expected in order to stop the slipping.

If the belt looks ok and the pulleys aren't worn then I would suggest tightening it a bit.

    Cheers Andrew

I remember a thread earlier this year where the issue was solved with some kind of Spray on the belt. However, if the belt is slipping that badly perhaps either adjustment or replacement will be the go.

I apologise in advance VX, but I read the title and had to have a cheeky look see.

I slip my belt off and she laughs, unless I'm dreaming and then she squeals like a pig

I've tried to tighten the pully and can't seem to get it much tighter, but its still squeeling. Might have to buy a new belt I think

Be careful with spray on belt grip. If it gets into the bearings then you'll know what squealing is.

you can hold a bar of soap on it and stop the squealing....does not take much. The belt was quoted to me on my last service for $103. I'll probably buy one a bit later, no rush with these new belts. They don't exactly snap like old belts used too.

just b4 i went to cape york i had my belt replaced . 2 days after it was replaced it started to make noise at start up , but would quiet down after a couple of minutes ,i thought it would bed in . it got worse every day . after 7600km when i was REALLY over it my mechanic replaced it with a genuine toyota model . Quiet as a mouse ever since . this was after using all sorts of stuff to shut it up and including cleaning all the pulleys and replacing the pulley bearings . the dayco belt was replaced with a genuine toyota .

The soap idea I have heard of before.

I must say I had a blonde moment earlier today and didnt loosen the pulley bolt before trying to turn the pulley tensioning bolt. Hence once I banged my head against the wall I had a revelation that I wasnt doing it correctly (yeah the wife tells me all the time but hey I enjoy it ) so all I had to do was loosen the pulley bolt and then tighten the pulley and so far so good.

and for all those that care I am not actually blonde

not sure if relevant but mine was also squealing (car that is) for some time, took it for service and he rang to say i lost a belt. I say what? there is a double belt (the low one i think) and i was missing one. Since then all good now I have two.

                            cheers,

well the belt snapped last week, so I replaced it. Now it has started squeeling again, my concern is that the reason it snapped last time was that it was too tight. It only squeels when under heavy load and changing gears ie taking off from lights or going up hills. From what I can tell its the AC pulley thats squeeling.
Any ideas? could it be someting wrong with the compressor gettting too tight and putting too much presuure on the belt?
