Air is not a good conductor of heat. Without liquid circulating, the indicated temperature may be considerably lower than actual. Also depends on where the coolant probe is located.

Mu old man was an RAA service contractor and ran a mechanical / radiator repair business for many years, I couldn't tell you the number of people that lost the coolant in their vehicle and couldn't understand why they cooked the motor as the temp gauge was reading that the engine was cool.Originally posted by MidLifeCrisis View Posthmm.
Aj, so you are saying the temp guage cannot readthe extremely hot air that replaced the hot liquid? Does not make sense to me. I have a food temp guage that reads the ambiant temp when not poked in food. I have an EGT that reads ambiant temp. When hot gases flow past it reads that and I'm sure it would read liquid as well.
I don't understand the technical reasons why, however the temp sender unit in motors doesn't read hot air very well. If you doubt my wisdom MLC, empty the coolant out of your Prado and drive it until the temp gauge reads it is overheating, go on I dare you

All our engines on the boat have low coolant alarms(visual & audible). It is as AJ said the only true way to detect total coolant loss and then overheating = cooked motor. iantz the sensor looks the goods so do we buy one for MLC then drop the coolant out to test it. Reckon I will get one.

Sounds intriguing, can't wait to hear what you've doneOriginally posted by Noobie View PostYeap! But it's top secret!
There's some extra goodies getting thrown in the old girl that some of you might enjoy. So stay tuned. Will add it all to my build thread. Will be at least a month. But should come back a fair bit different. Thought while they have it might as well get everything sorted out the way it should be...
