  • Siphoning from Prado Dual Tanks

    Hi all,
club and I did a trip this weekend in the dunes. We were to cover 167kms as per GPS routing. Other vehicles on the trip were a Jeep Wrangler JK, Y61 Nissan patrol, Nissan Xterra and the lead car a G500 Mercedes wagon.

The xterra, G500 and wrangler were carrying 25 litre jerry can each, but the patrol did not. Long story short the rigs were running low on fuel, and the wrangler had to pull out after covering 80kms due to mechanical issues.

I was the only one having ample fuel and could have spared it to the patrol and xterra atleast to complete the intended route.

We tried to siphon fuel from the fuel filler, but the sub-tank, the one under the cargo area was close to empty and due to the bend in the filler tube the siphon hose would not reach.

Any ideas or experience on siphoning from the main tank of the Prado, the one that is under the middle of the chassis?

I guess no one has this, what is the distance between fuel stations typically in the remotest parts?

In Australia? Beetween Oodnadatta and Birdsville there is about 600-800km of Simpson Desert sand dunes, depending on the route taken. On the Canning Stock Route and some other outback tracks there can be over 1000km between fuel stops. 167km is a very short distance in the Aussie outback.

Sorry, can't say I've ever needed to siphon fuel from the main tank of a Prado before.

I am heading off soon on a trip across Madigans line in the Simpson desert, we will be doing a minimum of 800km between fuel, but need to take enough fuel to handle 1000km + in case we cant get through (which is highly likely) This is across 1100 sand dunes and for most of the trip there will be no real road. Minumum vehicle requirements for the trip is a fuel capacity of 240 litres for a diesel, we have 1 petrol coming and he needs to carry 300lts.

Given the way the fuel filler for the dual tanks is set up I doubt you would be able to syphon out of the front tank. I know the rear tank has a drain plug which would be one way of getting fuel out of that, not sure if the front tank has a drain!

        Cheers Andrew

I did have a little drama recently that I had to drain both tanks. Just removed pipe between tanks 1&2 at tank 2 then siphoned it that way. Worked ok but was doing it from a pit

          Regards Adam

Thanks folks, so the pipe feeding the sub to the main is the access point....just in case.

Our average consumption in sand is around the 20-22l/100km in the sand. This is non-aggressive driving. If we were to take aggressive lines in the dunes, with a a lot side sloping then the consumption would increase to 30l/100km easily.
