  • Kluger is BIG alternative to Prado

I did some comparisons and what struck me the most was that the Kluger has the same wheel base and track as a Prado.

So if a family was after a largish four wheel drive, and was happy with a petrol engine, the Kluger will fill the need without going to a Prado for more offroad capability.

There's bound to be more interior space in a Kluger because it is a monocoque design.

    Kluger vs Prado dimensions

    length 4785mm vs 4850mm
    width 1910mm vs 1875mm
    height 1760mm vs 1995mm

    Wheelbase 2790mm vs 2790mm
    front track 1630 vs 1575mm
    rear track 1640

    ground clearance 206mm vs 205mm
    interior width 1517mm vs ??
    interior height 1245mm vs ??

    wading depth ?? vs 700mm
    approach angle ?? vs 32mm
    departure angle ?? vs 27mm

I am trading my Kluger in for a Prado. Main reason is for towing and 4wd ability, but the new Kluger has the dumbest back seat if you have 3 children like I have. It would be ok for two kids and the occasional friend (assuming boot is full).

There isn't much extra room in the Prado over my existing Kluger, and I think the new one would have just as much room.

I've just done 100,000kms in my Kluger, and while it has a beautiful ride and is very comfortable, it is a horribly handling car, and with the worst throttle response I have ever seen on a car. The engine is totally unsuited to towing as every time you see a hill it revs its guts out. The missus's X-trail is a better tow car, even with less grunt.

Fuel consumption over 100,000km has averaged at around 11l/100k, but I drive mostly freeways to work. It shoots up to 14 in traffic.

Mine has been unusual compared to rest of the fleet in that it has had the entire engine and gearbox out of the car twice to replace seals around the transaxle, with a total of 35 hours warranty labour. It is also the only one that has done a lot of towing (1300kg), so make up your own mind about it as a tow car.

            Legweak.

Have you test driven the two vehicles?
              Or looked inside?
My wife didn't even want to take it for a test drive I insisted but what a disappointment no low down toqure all revs.
The D4D diesel leaves the 3.5 petrol for dead.
I held back ordering the Prado hoping the Kluger would do being cheaper with more fruit on it.
But alas all I did was get a spot further down the que waiting for a Prado.
I even got into an argument with a Toyota sales woman whom started slagging off the Prado to try and sell me a Kluger.
The Kluger is a pretender built for the American market and they can have it.

Don't get me wrong, guys - I wasn't for a minute suggesting that the Kluger has the 4x4 capabilities of the Prado - just wanted to highlight for those people who buy 4x4's to be a peoplemover, the Kluger could be a good alternative, if they never plan on taking it across the Simpson.

Why buy a big four wheel drive and not use it for what it is designed for?

Many people just want a bigger vehicle but do not necessarily need four wheel drive capability, ergo the 2WD Territory.

I'd have to agree with you there Lawrence.

The more we can convince the soccer mums and shopping trolley buyers that the Kluger is a genuine alternative .... the greater the chances of getting a new D4D and seeing more Prados covered in mud  :P

                    Cheers

                        I don't believe Kluger's have a CDL, but I could be wrong.

Actually, I've had another thought about Kluger vs Prado.

I'm hoping that soccer moms and families buy the Prado instead of the Kluger because there would be heaps of preloved Prados in the used market in 2 to 4 years time which have never been offroad that will become available to my budget.

So keep those Prados moving out the door. Who would want to buy a used Kluger in 2 - 4 years time? I reckon that the resale value on Klugers will be horrible next to the Prado.

Funny thing is I have a new Kluger and a prado in my driveway at the moment and the Kluger is wider

I know what lawrence is saying. Please include me in that boat as I won't be going off road at all... or at this stage not planning to! There are heaps of Prados doing soccer mom duties. Kluger is a real alternative in this regard.

Personally, I prefer Prado for it's extra space and the bigger, torquey 4.0L and D4D engine options. I also prefer the Prado's looks. The other thing to note is that the Kluger's wheels are quite big... so replacing those tyres won't be very cheap!

I noticed too... but still lacks the Prado's vertical height.

                              Prado is a truck.

Kluger is a crossover based on Camry.
