  • Air Conditioning/cabin air filter

    Hi all,

After some 80km on dirt last weekend I'm surprised how much dust has ended up in my interior. I'm usually fairly attentive to closing the recirc when passing other cars and their dust and I have my windows closed. I haven't had a chance to look for signs of leaks anywhere yet.

My previous Subaru Forester had a filter in the cabin air system and seemed to filter out a heck of a lot of dust.

The Prado owner's manual speaks of an optional filter, has anyone fitted one?

I wonder if there are aftermarket ones available.

    TIA,
    Drew.

Ahh, sorry about that, I'll have to get my signature together. ops:

We have a 2005 Prado Pilbara, basically the same spec as the GXL.

I'm in for the 1,000km service on Monday, I'll ask the spares people then.

      Thanks for your reply,

      drew.

          Thanks 120man,
          :-)

I'll pop the glovebox out tomorrow night and have a look if there is one there, although I doubt there is one fitted.

Thanks for the link, good website that one.

          Cheers,

          Drew.

I just ended up getting an OEM one from my Toyota dealer. It was $73! I don't have time at the moment to chase around and get a better one, would be interested to hear if anyone else manages to get a better one.

They seem like a popular thing in Europe and the USA.

              Cheers,

The cheapest way to get a filter, is to go to any aircon/refrig. mechanic,
if you see one anywhere, just ask him if he has a piece of filter material approx. 40cm x 25cm x 1 cm thick.
Just mention the genuine cost from Toyota and I recon you will get it for nothing !
We nearly all carried filter material in service vans at all times, and have seen heaps thrown out and wasted.
Should only cost you approx. $2-00 if you have to pay for it..

                  ops: ops:

The though crossed my mind about a fridgy. My brother-in-law is an apprentice refrigeration mechanic, I should've asked him! D'oh! Oh well, money spent now, next time I'll give it some more though.

                  Thanks,

                  Drew.

I tried to make one, used a piece of vaccuum cleaner filter, foam about 8mm thick, and held in with a few drops of contact. I thought it would be washable, and so save that way. It was a bit too restrictive though, so I had to pull it out. Perhaps very thin foam? I tried to find 3m Filtrete, but the local airconditioning places thought there was something wrong with me.

                      G'day Mates

I have the same problem in Dubai and mine doine only 11K.
It happens when you switch your AC mnode to external mode (not circulation mode), this option allows air vents to open up to the external air bypassing the filter

According to a toyota wiz this filter is made to filter hot air prior to circulation ! Beats me :? His words only

Any way if you drive on sand, just lock your AC to inner circulation mode and see the difference your self

                      Cheers

my aircon powers along. I installed a one of those inside/outside thermometer things, (only because it had a voltage meter with "low voltage" alarm on it). and seeing as i had no use for the external thermomometer, i ran it behind the dash and stuck it to the inside of the airconditioning duct on the drivers side (given wifey often closes hers cos it's too cold)

on a hot day (34 degres) with the air coming from the outside world, best it would do was about 18degrees. i switched it over to re-cycle, and it drops to about 8 degrees.

coldest i've recorded is 7.5, warmest was 67. who needs a sauna!!!
