    Re: Speedo accuracy

Yep I can confirm the worst car I had for speedo error was a Mazda 6 -

I'm sitting on an indicated 110km/h & trucks are passing me on the freeway....

The error was something like 14km/h.....

but the fuel economy was out of this world!

      Re: Speedo accuracy

The speedo on my 2005 Prado is about 5% slow. Noticed it first when we did the Birdsville/Oodnadatta tracks in 2008, I didn't seem to travel as far as the signs indicated I had gone. :?: Recently I got a GPS, and now find that if I sit on 60, the GPS tells me I am doing 65. I have BFG 265/70R17's .

        Re: Speedo accuracy

2004 VX 4l V6 reads 125km/h on the clock, and GPS reads 118 (tested with two different GPS units)
Ironically the odo is UNDER reading. After doing 100km according to the trip meter, the GPS reads 101.6km

You would think if the speedo was over reading that the odo would over read as well...

2004 Grande V6 with 265/65R17 D694s - speedo reads spot on (within 1-2km) of GPS readings.

Interestingly, my old 80 series had the speedo readings almost spot on once I'd fitted 305/70R16s (33s) instead of the standard tyres.......

The first 120 series from 03 to 04 have spot on speedos. Mine is a 03 V6 Grande and it is spot on. I think the update model in 04 was when the speedo began over reading.

That is very possible, mine is a October 04 which I believe was right after the mods that they did here in S.A (September). Pity that their "new cool" mods took a step backwards...

                  Re: Speedo accuracy

'03 V6 GXL and the speedo is consistently 2km/hr less than the GPS. But I noticed that even stopped, the speedo is pointing slightly under the 0. It could be that I'm fairly tall so getting a bit of parallax error. If I sat lower it would probably be spot on.

Hi Fellas. My KZJ95R on std tyres reads 103 kph on speedo to 100 kph on GPS. My RAV4 mk3 is also the same. Hi-Ace super custom was also the same - must be a Toyota thing. Cheers, Derb.

                      Re: Speedo accuracy

Drove down to the Gold Coast yesterday and wondered why I was cruising past all the other cars when we were all sitting on the limit using cruise control. I had new tyres put on last week (Pirellis) so knew that the speedo must have been reading wrongly so got out the hand-held GPS and checked. When the speedo was sitting on 100kph, I was doing 102.8kph and when sitting on 80kph the GPS said I was doing 81.8kph. Since Chairwoman Anna is getting her boys in blue to catch everyone over the limit by any small amount, no leeway; I have taken this into consideration.

I noticed that when we got the Pirelli Scorpions the speedo went from overestimating by about 7-8 % to now 2-3%. We run them mostly at about 42 psi which may make a difference too!

                        Cheers

                          Re: Speedo accuracy

My 08 shows 110 on the speedo. GPS says 105, speed check signs when we were in Vic last month showed the GPS as spot on.
Generally seems to be reading 5 or 6 % over actual speed.
Pretty safe margin for error from Toyota.
Tend to drive off the GPS, no problems so far.
