OK, after getting under the beast and playing around with what at first appeared to be a loose exhaust system I still have this mysterious knock from the rear. It only happens as the car comes to a halt. It's slightly muffled and definitely coming from the back end of the car. I emptied the drawers, removed the tool kit, dumped the Engel but the noise persists. It's a subtle knock, knock, knock, knock. It's like four or five knocks in about 2 - 3 seconds. Doesn't happen when accelerating or cornering. Shocks, brakes, wheels, tyres, suspension all feels good. Ideas?

As silly as it sounds, check your jack is securely in place... I always screw it up a few notches to put pressure on the top mount and hold it firm...Last edited by Smithy - 120 D4D; 31-07-2013, 07:38 PM.2009 White KDJ120R Manual fitted out for family camping and touring - See my Rig Build at http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27887-Smithy-s-Rig-Build

Thanks fella. Yes, full of fuel. The jack lives in a canvas bag down the side of the drawers so it doesn't rattle at all.Dave

Rear door, striker & or support catch adjustment.
To diagnose rap some nitto ( elec tape) around the rear door support, the metal part on vehicle that the plastic on door goes into when it closes, that will make it tight & hide the noise if that's it.
Then drive if he noise is gone, remove the tape & adjust hinges, catch/support & striker as necessary.
Look for marks on striker to see if its been hitting.
Jeez the stuff can be hard to explain, hope you can un jumble it & that helps.

Mine does it, doesn't matter how much fuel is in it.
I always assumed it was the tail shaft. Dunno why. Just a guess.2004 Prado GXL. v6 auto, ARB deluxe bar, exhaust, 2" EFS lift kit, Outback Acc rear bar,

yep mine does it to, but only on reasonable hard braking. If braking soft I don't hear it at all. To me it sounds like its coming from rear left. Also doesn't matter how much fuel is in mine could be full or empty still does it.Andrew

It's definitely coming from the fuel tank area towards the rear of the car and only during braking, not cornering. The rear door is not the culprit. I think I can remember reading about this some time ago. As there are no issues with the rear driveline, suspension etc I won't worry about it. Now to find that frigging rattle under the bonnet.Dave

Inner guards - check, bonnet scoop - check, lights - check, grill badge - glued on check, engine cover - check. There's still something rattling here only at idle and in gear. Will keep looking and poking about.Dave
