  • Engine/Cab Diesel heater

Hi all, is it possible to fit a pre-heater, something like a Webasto to a 2009 LC5 SWB 3.0 D4D? Prepping up for the winter and my old Range Rover's not going to make it this year, so am prepping the LC for winter Was there one available as a bolt in/upgrade or do I need to buy a 3rd party one?

This is Australia mate, not Antarctica. What would you need that for?

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.

You don't know that, there are a few Russians that post here. He is talking about upcoming winter, so defiantly in the Northern Hemisphere.

Anyways, the Websco system is used on the tour coaches that I used to drive in Canada (late '90's) so I am speaking of long term memory here.

Brilliant system, on the 11.5L Detroit Diesels they would only take 15 minutes to get the engine temp up to running temp. I can't comment on how far the technology has come in the last 13 years.

Personally, I used to change the battery out in my '88 Dodge Lancer 2.5L every two years, would get 1100CCA or better. I can remember one morning after night shift at a ski field, the parking lot temperature was a lovely -38C. I thought that I would never get the car started. Foot to the floor before cranking, 2 minutes of solid cranking away she went - but I am sure the ECM lost the plot. Several mechanics have told me, that the ECM tends to "dump" fuel at below -10C, and a battery will loose 100CCA for every 5C below -15C. I must have started the car finally on 0 Volts!

If you have a two battery system, I'd run it off of the second battery - I THINK from memory they were plumbed in on the main fuel line with a T fitting - but my memory could be bad on that.

Is there no block heater in the Overseas model's? I can't even think of which side of the D4D it would be on, but the non-exhast side to me would make more sense.

      Hope it all goes well!

Ooops, sorry, forgot I didn't have my location set. Lucky for you, it doesn't drop to -10, and a guess the diesel flows better upside down as well

It's mainly for my own comfort - and to reduce wear on the engine in the first 5 mins during cold weather - it gets down to -10/12 here - not enough to need a block heater, but enough for my old bones to feel the chill in the am.

I know on VW it's a simple plug in upgrade - wasn't sure about the LC.

Bit more fiddly I'd say - could only find the UK (Sorry!) link - http://www.webasto.com/gb/markets-pr...arking-heater/

Years ago back when I was a truck mechanic in the UK we used to fit Eberspacher cab heaters.. They were the ducks guts. Nice warm cab for the overnighters and it prevented diesel from waxing up in the fuel system too.

Thanks - had looked at those but was concerned that they wouldn't help with the diesel/engine side of things
