  • Mine was in for a service and they mentioned about the towbar and asked what I was towing and if I used a hitch.
Apparently when using a hitch and going through a ditch/depression, it places stress on the bolts due to the angles.
They didn't have the parts to fix problem so have to take it back in.
Southside Toyota at Woolloongabba, have been happy with them

      Picture as promised.
I had mine checked as part of the 90k service. Nothing was said when I picked it up and there was no sticker. 'All good' they said.
This morning I received a letter saying my special order parts had arrived. Not having ordered any parts I called them up. They told me it 'was parts for the tow bar recall. Could I drop in? will only take 10 minutes.' Sure, I says. I've got to come past today anyway.

I turned up and they 'fitted' the sticker. Recall now completed. LOL

      • My truck was serviced yesterday, and Toyota replaced two bolts with 8.8 high tensile ones, and a no liabity sticker relating to use of load distribution hitches, good bless them. Nothing else said or asked by them.

        • Dropping mine off in the morning for the towbar recall check. Be interested in seeing if they offer the free WDH swap as some have been. If the toyota hitch is not adjustable (and not compatible with other vehicle makes) I'll be saying no thanks and get an HR bar fitted for piece of mind.

            Hi All,

Just got my Toyota tow bar recall done yesterday, The bumper bar was removed and the tow bar was removed and checked on a gauge (apparently) and passed, new bolts were installed and the car is good to go.
Upon receiving the car back i noticed that there is a new supplement for correct towing methods book in the service manual and also a sticker over the previous section in the handbook with updated details and also a sticker on the tow bar stating Toyota recommends using only a Toyota Factory Supplied LDH with the tow bar or it basically voids warranty and liability.

I have been towing with a Drop Hitch HR WDH Kit for the last year and the previous owner has also for the last 4-6 years and no issues.

I rang my insurance company to confer with them as i do not want to be liable in the event of a accident or deemed to be negligent should the tow bar snap and the van run off and clean up someone's else s family. (as now legally I actually know about the issue as i took it to Toyota for the recall)
The Insurance company (CGU) stated they didn't have a problem with it as long as HR didn't as the tow bar was installed from factory and should be fit for purpose, but would not put it in writing. They further stated maybe it was a quick money grab from Toyota and if i was still uncomfortable ring HR and confirm it all.

Me being me, wanting to have all my issues sorted, I then rang HR and told them the issue from the start, they stated since Toyota has advised me personally and updated the car manual book, not to use anything other than a Toyota LDH. A HR WDH system should not be used as i would be deemed to be liable in the event of an accident once a investigation occurs as i am well aware of the issue.

Best situation is to either can the HR WDH or go with Toyota LDH (which does not suit my needs as i need a drop hitch) or change the Tow bar package to a HR system which is fully compatible and fully covered.

So now i am in limbo land, and very annoyed with the extra expense about to be incurred.
My best course of action to ensure my family's safety and anyone else s family is to change the Tow bar to a HR System Part Number 02912R for $410.00 supply only or $540.00 Fitted.

Very tempted to write a letter to MR Toyota, stating that the product supplied is technically not "fit for purpose" and demanding a refund on the factory tow bar.

Wait to see your thoughts on this and whether i am heading down the right path, considering most of you may be in the same situation as this.

            Very annoyed with Mr Toyota

Will be very interested in the Toyota answer to your request for refund so you can get a tow bar fit for your purposes.
I was told at purchase by sales at Grand Toyota Southport to fit the genuine unit and not the Hayman Reece bar for warranty reasons. They organised all fittings of extras including the bulbar ( genuine) which Inever received a recall on as well as the brake booster recall. I only became aware of all recalls via Pradopoint.
Grand Toyota also knewI was getting the Hayman Reece hitch but still said to fit the genuine tow bar.

              • Thanks FC - not at all what I was expecting it to look like!!

Certainly no good for any of us with a lift - or a lifted van to match...
                Cheers

                        • So it's not a recall until we receive a letter? I'm in the same boat as PradoGXL08. I'm an original owner with my details unchanged since I bought the car. I haven't heard anything yet from Toyota.

                            • Well that was a waste of time.... Toyota had the prado for 4 hours and ring me to say all's good and come pick it up.
Checked bolts and all OK but replaced them just to make sure. He pointed out that I didn't have a standard toyota tongue (Hayman Reece) fitted and offered to swap... I asked if it was adjustable and able to be used on other vehicles and he just looked at me like DUH!!!!!!

Asked to look at what they would swap it with and he came back with a standard hitch/tongue. Told him I have one and use it all the time except when towing the caravan. Asked him if the HR setup is OK to use and said "yeah don't see why not" even though they put the sticker on the towbar stating that "Toyota take no responsibility if using an aftermarket LDH bla bla bla".
Think I might call in and talk to someone else at a different dealer and see what they say. Failing a definite answer will call insurance company and ask the question. If a bit iffy I'll just go get myself a Hayman Reece towbar to cover my backside incase the unfortunate happens!

True our prado is lifted at the rear (465mm to centre of towball ) and we used a drop head before but we have also towed the same van with the standard hitch and it seemed to tow OK and seemed level as well, so will try it with the "new" improved Toyota LDH and see how it goes if no good than we will either tow the van with the Colorado ute using the HR WDH which we kept or have the Toyota hitch removed and a HR bar fitted. I believe at the moment that the Toyota bar will be OK

Picture of van attached without HR WDH when we first picked it up (prado is lifter at back)
