120 Towbar recall

After much consideration and a recommendation from D4D to change the towbar I have done it....

what about the owners that are second or third hand buyers, they can't even check on the recall web site as there is no mention of it there.

Yep second owner here - might have to force myself to ring Toyota Stealership and confirm this.

Toyota put it down as a customer safety service not a recall, if you informed Toyota of your taking ownership / new address they would have sent you " the letter".

I've bought 2 new 120's both with Toyota towbars, I am yet to get a letter, which doesn't matter as I've since built my own towbar.

Andrew I have not heard anymore yet only that the new bar bolts were loose so I will post more once Toyo get back to the owner

Sounds like they didn't torque up the bolts properly. Or there is some other issue they are keeping quiet about.

Also am still spreading the word on the Auto stick shift fix.

That is total crap service from anyone ! They should not be doing any recall if they can't replace the faulty designed part immediately, same day, no excuses.
Just went through the Government recall site and no mention of a recall on tow bars.

I don't agree with your comments John, would you have rathered the dealer leave the faulty towbar attached??
Do you think that if they had left it attached with loose bolts and some 'issue' that prevented them from simply tightening them up, that the Prado owner wouldn't have towed whilst a solution was found?

Sometimes the average punter needs to be saved from themselves - I cant imagine the PR for the dealership that left the dodgy towbar attached that failed!!

That said, I agree that Toyota handling is this issue not first class..

I feel quite the opposite in regards to their service on this.

I bought my car 2nd hand and have never had it touched by service department since owning it (thank god).

Decided to get my new key cut and coded through Toyota and before the lady had even booked my car in for what I called about she was in my ear about the towbar.

She tried twice to get me to have it seen to while they were cutting the key and was very persistent, actually started annoying me in the end.

Then when I dropped the car off for the key she started up once again trying to get me to have it done.

So in that respect I think she did her job very well and they were completely on the ball for the towbar issue, but bloody hell she wouldn't take no for an answer...

Rang the Toyota Dealer that removed my " Caravanning neighbours" Towbar to check that there were no ongoing problems.
They said that this was the first time they have had the problem reoccur and that they believe that whoever did the original replacement did not torque the the tension correctly They did not tell me what they were doing but I think that they are replacing the replaced Bar.

I have decided to change my bar cost $500 compared to cost of van thousands. Are Toyota bars good or bad, I have seen broken ones, not just lose. I'm not waiting for the jury decision. To me 500 is a small price to pay for piece of mind. If you think that happens to other people, one day God forbid one day any of us could be the "other people"

Where does the HR bar sit? Is it lower. Under the bumper? I have the long ranger water tank under there so not sure if it would fit. Picking up a camper this week so I've been following this thread....

Yet to get mine done - use TLC O'Connor and has to be special trip to City Toyota - no service $$ for them just warranty work

Well after following this tread for last 6 months, had received the toyota letter - decided to have the whole toyota system ripped out and install a Hayman Reece (class 4) tomorrow for $495 fitted - peace of mind as well, bugger them with putting stickers on the OEM one (no affiliation with them below)

Same place I had mine fitted KIMBOPRADO.... Did a good job and even replaced the whole wiring harnes and plug with the HR one that comes with the bar (Also made and fitted a new mounting bracket for the airbag valves - No extra cost)
