  • Outside Temp Sensor Display Fault

    Hi All,

For about 8 months now my Outside Temp Sensor Display was been reading incorrectly.
By this I mean anywhere between correct temp and -30 Deg.
But more Often than not it sits around -15 to -30 Deg.

When it hits -30 Deg. the Heater comes on Full Bore and the only way to fix this problem short term was to run the A/C and drop the temp on Climate Control to max Cool.

Has anyone had a similar problem, and what was done to fix it?

I would have a look at the temperature sender, it is located on the centre bracket
in front of the air conditioning condenser near the horn.

Try unplugging it and checking for dirty connectors etc, other option is to swap it out.

    Cheers

I would reckon the sensor is faulty because if it has a wiring fault or the sensor is disconnected the display reads ----.

If you are able to borrow a sensor to test the system, just be aware that when you plug the new sensor in and turn the key on straight away it will still read the last temp reading for about 30 seconds then will count back at intervals to current ambient temp.

They appear to update temp every 20 to 30 seconds for what i have found

        Hi All,

Further update, Ordered and Fitted a New Thermistor Assy, (which just pulls off), and replaced with New one.

Same problem. Did this in front of Toyota Mechanic.

They spent several hours trying to locate and fix problem.
The service adviser advised me they found High Resistance in Wiring Harness and were repairing it.

After they did my Towbar Recall - Mine was OK, No replacement necessary, Drove home only to have the Same issue flare up.
Outside Temp Gauge Reading -30Deg. and the Heater coming on Full bore.

Advised Dealer, who was then puzzled (I suppose it doesn't take that much to puzzle them), and I then advised him he will get it back to fix on Friday.

        Will keep you updated.

Another fault I had was my mode button on Steering Wheel, wasn't working.
Found out that I have an open circuit in the Clock Spring.
The Clock Spring will need to be replaced.
The cost is $645.15 Supplied qnd fitted.

Has anyone done a Clock Spring?

        Please advise

          Hi All,

Update on my Outside Temp Sensor -

Replaced Sensor (Thermistor Assy P/N 8879022131) Still reading Eraticly.
Toyota Dealer spent several more hours on it on Friday-

Checked Continuity from Air Temp Sensor from Engine Bay - Couldn't Fault

Checked Continuity from Bulk Head Connector (HE1) to Display - Couldn't Fault

Found Bulkhead Connection (HE1) to not be Correctly Tensioned (loose)
Re-Tensioned and Tested - Now Fixed!!

They only charged me for 1/2 hour work, even though they spent over 3-4 hours on it.
