  • How do you Repair the Silver Trim on Dash and Door

    Hi Guys

Any tips for care and repair on the silver trim on the dash & doors and centre console ?

I took my brother-inlaw home from a big nite out , and he has crossed his legs with his shoes just rest on the trim on the dash . The next day , while cleaning the car ... I noticed the trim was badly scratched . The paint/coating seem very thin .

Has anybody painted the trim ? Or can I add a extra clear coat to the trim to protect it ??

You mean he isnt replacing them at his cost

Me too, I have about 1cm square of silver missing from our GPS cable rubbing...damn corrugations

Maybe Toyota do touch up paint?

I detailed my own car a few years ago and sourced the exact colour from the manufacturer and had a paint shop pressurize it into a couple spray packs.

For the panels that I need to redo, I masked off the areas I did not want to paint, and primed and sprayed them, let them dry and they turned out fantastic.

            Another DIY jobbie.

              Hi m999999,

I have used many times in my line of work vinyl repair people.

These people have the proper paints and primers to ensure a good job and the preparation before painting is just as important.

If you cant find these people in your yellow pages your local Toyota dealer should be able to help you because they use them all the time.

The interior plastic trim is certainly not very durable is it? Do other people have the same trouble? We jump in and throw wallets, keys, phones on the dash and it hasnt taken long to mark at all? How have other pradopointers overcome this other than placing gear on the floor

                cheers

I have been into Clarke rubber and found a mesh rubber mat when you place your mobile phone and other junk on the console nothing moves when you are driving on the balck top.. it works OK also am mate of mine uses a square on the dash for the blue tooth device. It looks like it is woven strands of rubber.....so far i do not have any marks on the console beside the gear shift and that is where my phone stays.

When getting my uhf fitted I watched the installer rip out the silver pieces from the console in about half a second. I guess new pop-in sections from Toyota would be out of the question, pricewise?

I've had the same problem with the cover on the ash tray in the back door that one of the kids plays with.

Can you give us details such as paint/colour codes, or a point of contact in Toyota to find that info, D4D? I have the same problem and want to do the same fix.

Hi 4xx4 Driver - Mate - I did this to a Pajero when I used to live in Melbourne. The local paint shop pressurized the paint cans. They also sourced the paint colour and it took them a few days to get it.

You could seek out a good local paint store, who more than likely will colour-match your interior colour then pressurize it if you wish.

                        Hope this helps.

Thanks D4D. I've only tried my local Pep's and am not confident about their colour matching ability. Will continue looking around ...

DIgging up an old post here. Like everyone else, my silver trim is getting pretty patchy and I'd like to respray it. Is anyone able to kindly provide an update or solution to this problem? Is there an OTC colour (like Holts) that matches this silver trim or is it best to get it matched from an auto paint shop?

                              Hi Offroader
I got a can of auto spray paint from Supercheap. It's not a perfect match but when the trim is back in the car you can barely notice. "PJ9162, Mercury Silver". Cost about $4 and looks great. I took a bit of time applying 3 coats and sanding with wet n dry between each coat. Use car polish when finished and the end result is very good and a lot more durable than the Toyota OE job.
                              Cheers
