Re: How do you Repair the Silver Trim on Dash and Door

At the time i purchased my prado i noticed a mazda cx9 in the dealers that had very bad finish to the same silver trim in it. When i made a comment to the sales people about how bad it was and how it would turn me off buying it, he said they were actually going to replace them with new as you cannot repair them. Easy for them, they are not paying for the new bits i guess.

Going back to the Prado problem, why not try contacting anyone of the many specialists that do bumper bar repairs. We had a guy here fix up the wifes mazda3 after someone nudged it. He mixed the colour to be exact match and you w would never know he was there. He even re-did the colour on the side mirrors from where someone hd scratched them. All a perfect match. The mix up the colours on site, so would make an exact mix to suit you. Upp to you if you get them to spray the bits on your site or just buy the mixed up paint for yourself to do. I am sure they would come up with the correct colour. Luckily for me I dont yet have the problem, but I can see a small dot forming on the passenger side which may grow over time

I'm going to consider putting a carbon fibre film over the bits in the centre console on mine,
      just for something different too.

Re: How do you Repair the Silver Trim on Dash and Door

My Prado had done 155000 klm's when I bought it (now done 205000 klm's) so the trim was less than brand new.I priced new trim from both Toyota and a wrecker. Both were silly prices. So I took a piece of trim to an auto paint place and they mixed up some paint in an aerosol which was a fairly good match. Also sold me an aerosol of plastic primer. Came up quite well and finish is reasonably durable (better than the OEM finish anyway).Well worth the effort as fresh trim makes a huge difference to the look of the interior.

I got a can of auto spray paint from Supercheap. It's not a perfect match but when the trim is back in the car you can barely notice. "PJ9162, Mercury Silver". Cost about $4 and looks great. I took a bit of time applying 3 coats and sanding with wet n dry between each coat. Use car polish when finished and the end result is very good and a lot more durable than the Toyota OE job.

Thanks for this. There seems to be a couple of close matches you can purchase OTC. I ended up getting some mixed and put into a pressure pack after giving the original trim to a paint shop. They came up with (Dulux Spectrum Colour Grey Metallic 1182B) The colour is not identical to the factory colour but when installed the difference is pretty minimal. The original finish is ridiculously thin so I did a number of coats to prevent it scuffing again.

I'll have a go at this over the next week or so. The Prado was owned by Hobart wharf before I got is so its fairly beaten up. ill try to get some before and after pictures. I'm thinking ill go a more metallic finish though. only thing is I will lose the "ALL AUTO" from the drivers doors windows switches...

                Cheers, Ron

To update this, I've tried every place around my area. Nobody had a can of premixed paint close enough. There is only 1 supplier that can mix up a can for me but he is out of cans. He said he will have more in stock by mid Jan. I'm thinking ill have him add a little more metallic to it. I like to be unique! I'll repost again when I get some work done.

A thread here viewtopic.php?f=53&t=10374&p=134850#p134850 shows how to fit the carbon fibre wrap. Unfortunately the author has been banned and doesn't intend to return to the forum after a disagreement with the Mods, he left us this useful info though.

Re: How do you Repair the Silver Trim on Dash and Door

I also had a mate wear out the trim (passenger side window switch surround). The worst part was the car was only 2 days old.

For nearly three year's I have been wondering what to do about it. After reading this thread and in particular AJ120's post (thanks heaps) I decided to experiment with the Di_Noc carbon fibre look. I found a few YouTube videos showing how to apply it. I sourced mine from a mob in Cranbourne (Melbourne) on Ebay for less than $100 for 1 x 1.2m sheet. In the end I used less than half of it to do the dash trim, center consol and front doors.

                      Here's some photos

Overall the result looked more professional than I expected but I found the pattern to be a bit overt initially. After a few days it grew on me but it was still a bit overstated for my preference.

I decided to look at what other textures were available and came across one that can best be described as acid etched aluminium. It has a nice metallic sheen and is slightly darker than the original trim. It was about $20 dearer for the same size sheet but the finish was fantastic. I stuffed up on one section though so I haven't taken any photos yet. I'll try to finish the job and post some up soon.

                            Here you go.

                            http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWNX:IT

If you're going to go down this path you'll need to use some sort of adhesive to hold the corners around the air vents. 3M recommend a primer they sell when using Di-Noc in 3D. I didn't do this and in the third photo above you can see where it has lifted in the bottom left corner of the left hand air vent. All the corners lifted on a hot day as the material softens and shrinks slightly when heated. It was worse on the metallic vinyl I'm using now because it's even more pliable when heated. In the next couple of days I'm going to try again with a spray adhesive to see if that overcomes the problem. I hope it does as this product has the potential to solve the sensitive silver trim issue.

Could someone explain how to remove the trim from the centre console. Is it just clipped in. Don't want to go forcing anything until I am sure of what to do. Thanks

yep just cliped in, use a plastic spoon as a lever so as not to damage anything. once you have the first piece out you will see how it works. The clips are very sturdy so breaking them is unlikely.
