  • Just how water proof is the 120?

I am wondering how likely I will ruin the carpet on my 2003 GXL during my first water crossing.

Please tell me your experiences with water coming into the cab... or not if it's indeed water tight.

And any pics of indoor swimming pools or high tide marks lol would be appreciated... err I mean amusing.
Blue 120 GXL Lots of ARB goodies and 1 mysterious switch fitted by previous owner - I still don't know what it does

The drainage holes at the bottom of the doors needs to be sealed up or the water will get in through the doors and then out through the trim. Also ensure the large grommets at the firewall are also sealed up from pulling wires through the firewall.

There are also a couple of bungs under the body which a few members have found to be missing in the past, or the pressure of the water have pushed the bung into the cabin.

Is gaffa tape enough to seal the door drains?

Are all the other bungs easy to find?

As long as you keep moving then you should be fine, I've been through 70 metre wide crossings with water over the bonnet and not a drop got inside. If you stop, well that's another story, it will fill up very fast, I can tell you this from experience as well.

Just a few water crossing pics here http://www.pradopoint.com/album.php?albumid=289 Lived to tell the tale from all of them.

        Cheers Andrew

Good call on the door drains & grommets, but your airflow exits at the rear behind the rear bumper, so like AJ said if you stop your shagged

AJ, noticed no water blind across the front on any of the deeper crossings. Being a diesel fair enough but what about the force of the water through the radiator or the fan ?? No issues.....Cheers Steve

Those pics of Ivanhoe crossing must have been a while ago. Haven't been able to cross there since 2011. And definitely can't cross at the moment, after over 600mm of rain up there last week that caused a lot of flooding!

The Ivanhoe pics were with my first Prado, 2008 I reckon. Pity if you cant cross it as its a good drive the other side up to Wyndham!

When a series one landrover with a steel fan a few mm's away from the radiator was the latest in technology then certainly a blind will help. With a modern day 4wd with bigger headlights, bulbar, spotlights, finer cored radiator often with airconditioner core, transmission cooler and maybe intercooler in the front then I think the need for a blind is not nearly as important.

I have on occasions tied the fan off for deeper crossings as the fan will chop the water a bit. even on the longest and deepest crossings I've done without a blind the engine bay has stayed relatively dry, so long as you keep moving And I should add moving fast enough, which is probably 2nd low with a few revs on board, or maybe 1st low with a few more revs depending on the exact circumstances.

                    Cheers Andrew

I have a particularly stiff bit of rubber floor mat that I slip in front of the A/C condenser if I can't avoid a deepish crossing to stop water rushing through it and the radiator- takes only seconds to put into place.

I can vouch for the fact, if you are moving, water doesn't really come in. I can also vouch for that if you stop in deep enough water, your feet will be wet very quickly!
