  • Stay away from CARZOOS warranty or AP Eagers Group

So bought the 2009 Prado 2 years ago and took the sales pitch on Carzoos extended warranty where you can get it serviced at any of the dealers doing Carzoos. Bow Bow. This is where I should have looked deeper. What that means is you need to be in Brisbane or very very close to it to maintain the warranty.

I have been relocated with work to Hervey Bay and thought no probs I will just book in at local Toyota Dealer as they will be all using these extended warranty packages. Wrong. Thought this won't be a drama will just ring them and see how we sort this. Long short answer later is I need to drive 2 hours to Sunshine Coast and then wait for half a day for service then drive 2 hours back. Only option.

So my feedback to "dealer principal" who called is are you telling me (10 year qualified mechanic) that the Toyota dealer here is rubbish in Hervey Bay and if I get it book serviced by them it is unsafe for my vehicle and voids my warranty? Are they using non genuine parts and non trained techs? Do you want me to come all the way to your Holden dealer on the Sunshine Coast and pay $500 for a 2nd year to muck around with my car? Ok well if I am qualified and use genuine parts bought from you can I service it as I know my car better than your teenagers and will do it properly?
I even offered that if I pay $50 extra for local dealer to provide report to them on the service as it will save my missus and me the hassle of losing the family car for a day 2+ hours away.

In the end I said well this is where we part ways as customer and service provider but I will add I will be buying a Hilux this year and swapping the Prado next year for a new one and AP Eagers group will not be on my list. I am also making sure every known man knows about this too.
In todays consumer has many choices land i'll void the warranty but AP Eagers and Carzoos are top of the S^&t list now.

Sadly dealer extended warranties are usually so limited in their application that they really don't pay for themselves. I know a case where the warranty limits the spend each claim, limits the amount to parts only and caps the total payout per year.

While you are obviously upset it is a case of buyer beware. It is good to warn others but in my opinion naming is not necessary.

Yeah i get the name and shame bit but unless you know the name how will you know what to watch out for.

Be like saying one of the diesels from Japan has Injector seat issues. People are going to want to know which one.

You are right in the fine print it does limit the claim total spend per claim.

Buyer beware is very true. In my case i was silly enough to assume well this must be the same extended warranty mob all the Toyota dealers use. I was wrong but will know next time.

Sure. Then they will have five years to officially dishonour it.

Sadly, this kind of scenario has been well known for a long time, but people keep getting caught and these kinds of "warranties" are still legal.

Basically, all they do is lock you into a service contract with the dealer. If something does go wrong the "liability" is very limited and you're not actually getting anything for the extra spend. You are of course handing over a nice little commission to the sales rep. who has a little chuckle at how people keep falling for these things. The same little scam is tried on for all sorts of appliances and mobile phone contracts, etc.

I once asked a phone sales person that was trying to sell me a phone insurance policy to explain what the policy covered. Straight up he said he had no idea, I was the first to ever ask. Could he find out for me? No. People either pay it or pass and he didn't really care. I haven't dealt with Vodafone since and never will.

As soon as a sales rep mentions "extended warranty" be very suspicious and be prepared to walk away.

Generally the factory supported extended warranties are a good thing though whether you see the need or not is another thing. With the 90 and previous purchases I never bothered and to be honest if it wasn't for the 1kd injector issue I wouldn't have bothered with the 120 either but as I neared the magic 90k cutoff more and more people had injector and seat issues so I bought the extracare warranty. It paid for a new water pump and a full set of injectors before I sold the 120 so it was a good investment in my case. I wrangled a deal with the 150 so bought it up front.

I suspect all the dealer procured warranties are the same as each other and certainly not as comprehensive as the factory backed extended warranty. The one I know most about the guy had a gearbox issue and had paid something like $2k for the extended warranty and expected all to be fixed at no cost. Well the parts were about $1k, he had a deductable of $500 and the labour was also about $1k so he would have been way better off getting the work done at a specialist gearbox repairer and keeping his money from the warranty. Live and learn.

As for the name and shame the dealer / insurer are doing what is included in their warranty and no more and no less so there is no point in taking them to task on the internet. A general warning about these generic dealer warranties is a good reminder but no need to kick someone who is following the rules in the policy.

Whether Toyota and some other larger manufacturers should offer the 5 year unlimited km warranty from the start is another question all together. I reckon yes but at the end of the day you pay for it somewhere.

I have never bothered with extended warranties. I work on the principal that if it needs extended warranty it isnt made well enough and i have previously walked away. Unfortunately The feed back probably never gets back to manufacturers that some people want quality products hence the influx of cheap rubbish and the need for others to reduce costs to compete

When the issue of repairs out of warranty come up, it's always good to keep in mind that consumer law in Australia requires that all goods sold be of "acceptable quality, fit for the purpose they are sold for and last the amount of time that a normal person would consider reasonable".

I don't think a single person on here, or anywhere else for that matter, would say that a $60K plus Prado should only last for 3 years. That means if you have a major failure outside the factory warranty you *MAY* have a claim against Toyota to get the vehicle repaired at their cost, regardless of having paid for an extended warranty or not.

IMHO, all extended warranties are a scam and not worth the paper they are written on, especially when they force buyers into ongoing business (and profits) with the seller...

I had a similar experience to MrRandom. I bought a Toyota extended factory warranty before the original one on the 120D4D ran out after phoning around Brisbane dealers and finding one where the finance manager was happy to negotiate on price. I had the injectors replaced and a couple of other smaller things done in the three extra years at the dealer closest to home with no problems. I think I ended up about $3000+ in the black after deducting the price I paid for the extended factory warranty from the cost of the repairs. I'll definitely buy another extended factory warranty when it gets time to replace the Prado in the future. (I also recall an Eagers extended warranty on a Jackaroo I had some years ago wasn't worth the paper it was printed on when I had an issue with paint corroding on the wiper arms.)

I don't mean dodgy extended dealer warranties I meant manufacturer 5 year versions ie the triple diamond company therefore the smoke and mirrors of the above scenario is reduced

This is timely, as I was just considering extended warranty as the Prado is near its end of the 3yr factory warranty. Toyota offer Extended Warranty Insurance (extended factory warranty only available when car is new) at $1420 for 24 Months/150,000 km. I think this is reasonable and will provide me with peace of mind. Does anyone else have this Toyota Warranty Insurance and more importantly had to make any claims or have any issues? I double checked that the injectors are covered (provided not damagaed due to bad fuel etc.) Cheers, Fred

I paid around $1400 for extended warranty through Toyota. It has since paid for an ECU $1500, injectors $3300 and loose gear stick $322... Happy days.

Yeah I think that was my frustration about this all. Partly my fault for assuming it was a Toyota extended warranty and not specific to a dealer.
The Toyota one would have been nice but out of all of this I have learnt to dig deeper again next time.
