  • Getting really annoyed with the fuel tanks

Hi fellow PPers, I have a question that I would answered I have a 05 120 series pre common rail and the fuel tanks are playing up on me, I have read a lot forums and tried searching but to no Advil they all seem to be bout the d4ds and going on bout the filter near the tank but I don't have one on mine.
Ok so here's the question... Has anyone put a electric fuel pump between the two tanks to pump fuel from the sub to the main with a switch on the dash to activate it ? Doing it this way(I think anyway) would b a lot less drama and more reliable and of cause it would be a high quality pump for that reason.
Can anyone help me out with the idea cause I'm sick to death of not knowing if it's going to keep going or run out of fuel

You might need to explain a bit more what your issue is, in reality you should just forget that you have 2 tanks and just treat it as one big tank, because that's effectively how it works, if its working correctly. Or do you have another issue?

    Cheers Andrew

Ok I was a bit vain with details so here goes late last year I got a gut full of water in the main tank so when I finally got home(only a couple k thank god) I drained the main tank dry and ripped it out of there so while I had the tank out I pulled the guts out and gave that screen a clean( I am a qualified diesel fitter so I have a fair idea what I'm doing) I than reassemble the tank and slipped it back in. I than went on a long trip for the weekend bout 2000ks worth and all was good no more water. Than a couple of weeks later I went on another trip bout 1000k to which at that point she ran out of fuel and I shill had 80l left and than it took me over half an hour to fuel it up. So to cut a long story short I clean all the lines out no blockage in them I traced all of them and clean them one by one and still the problem is there I even removed the breather never made a difference so I ordered a new one anyways still no change. Than a couple of weeks ago everything started working again up until yesterday same thing happened as before so now I'm at wits end and I think to stop all the dramas I'm thinking bout the electric pump. So that's bout it in a but shell

I have read about this issue before. I know its probably no help to you but Im sure it was some thing about the venturi or the likes which transfers the fuel from one tank to the other and some one else had the same issue as you and it turned out what ever this part is was working off and on. Now again not totally helpful but may jog some one else's memory or may know the post Im referring to....Don't give up yet lol.......Cheers Steve

Ok as it came good all hoses must be in the right spot, maybe pump is faulty?

Would seem more logical to fix whatever the problem is than to add more complexity by
          adding another external pump?

          Cheers

There was a post here somewhere about the filter between the tanks getting blocked and stuffing up the venturi. Have a search and see what you find.

This situation while not common is not unheard of and has been discussed a few times in various threads from memory. Here is one that comes to mind that may help you http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-Gauge-Sensors

I am sure there are other threads as well, just a matter of trolling around to find the right info.

              Cheers Andrew

yeah thanx guys I will try and get the tank out this weekend if I have time. leighW mine model does not have a external pump the are in the d4ds not the pre D4ds so at the end of the day its not really adding any more complexity, I just don't want it to happen again so why not put a pump on it its not that hard to plumb in as I am looking more towards reliabity more than anything else. but that will b after I have checked the system with the above link casuse I cannot justify spending $700 on the tank unit if it is going to play up again but that will be the last resort.
