You know you can wash that stuff off don't you? A scrub with a mild brush and some soapy water is the most it should need, it's just a protective coating.

      • Exactly, blue is just the coating over the white. A strong rub with soapy water and a rag and it will magically turn white. Bazinga!

            • Hi Gumboot

A couple of the rubber bungs that go in the floor were not correctly fitted. They were loose as buggery and allowed water to get in.

Pain in the butt to remove and re-fit interior to dry out. Those bungs should not leak anymore as I have stikaflexed them in.

All in all, good trip and as you say the water levels where not too bad. Nolan's was disappointing but then some of the other crossings did come up to the bonnet.

              Cheers

              Frank

              • SWMBO reckoned there was a squeak/rattle coming from "somewhere under the car." I couldn't hear anything. She made me sit in the passenger seat and we went for a little drive. Low and behold there's a rattle. I quickly removed the hub cap from the left front wheel to find the dust cover from the wheel spindle lock-nut had vibrated loose. Easy fix.

                • VERY high Fuel consumption, average 19km/100, 2004 120, diesel grande (1kz). I posted month back that I got water in my transmission. Flushed that many times and it seems to have come good. It was due a service so i did a few things myself and thought I'd wait a few kms and a a few $$ before the official service.

Thing is I have noticed the fuel consumption going THROUGH THE ROOF (not literally for the smart arses who usually comment and think they are funny).
By the computer, even after reset, I am struggling to get it below 19km/100.....previously always around 13.5km/100 in town with some freeway driving.
What has changed/ what was done
                  - Transmission flushed completely - using penrite FS, cleaned pan/ changed filter, flushed through using cooling line)
                  - front and rear diff oil changed (also penrite fluids used)
                  - transfer case fluid changed - (yep penrite again)
                  - air filter changed
                  - oil and oil filter changed (bursons mineral oil, probably should have used FS, but this was in before and consumption was ok)
                  - fuel filter changed ( mmm worried about this one, first time I have done it myself....what if I put the pipes back the wrong way? dont think so but could that cause high fuel usage
                  - fan belt was squeaking so tightened ( dual belt, tightened tensioner on alternator - what if I overtightened - could that cause this?)

Apart from over tightening belts, I can't see how any of these would cause such a dramatic change in fuel consumption. Gears are changing normally and not over revving or in too high a gear..

The other thing is it seems under powered, sluggish now.

I noticed once warm, if I stop the car/ ignition on / wait for lights to go out / restart that sometimes it gets a better....likes its resetting something - it doesn't get back to 13/15km/100 however still struggling to get under 19....

Starter motor also just clicking now and again, like a flat battery, except its not flat.....ill check connections for rust

So other things (that led to transmission water):
it was in really quite deep (just above top of tyres) silty water for a good 10 minutes, water seemed to leak into the transmission via a failed sump gasket.

But really transmission seems good now - dont think its that.

                  Sluggish, poor power/torque/pull

A mate suggested perhaps exhaust is full of crap from the silt?

Any thoughts you prado super stars out there?

Its and expensive game putting a car in for troubleshooting, perhaps it deserves a good toyota service? hook up to computer for check error codes etc? use genuine belts and fluids?

                    That is worth checking.

Also what grade were the oils. A more viscous grade will have an effect.

Otherwise I will leave this to others with more knowledge.

                    • Fitted a Provent 200. About the best spot I could find its out of the way but easy to change filter out when required. I've run the drain on top of the chassis rail so the tap is easy to get to when I need to drain it.

They were the recommend grades from the manual for diff/trans faces - bought from repco, but good call, could be working too hard on the diffs say. I think it would get better once warmed up however.....it does a little if I restart car, but not much.
Engine oil is the same as what was identical to when I changed it 5000kms earlier (because I bought extra to take away on trip).
                              Good suggestions though.
I think I'll put it in to get the timing checked next...

                              • Gave it and the CT a wash to remove the last of the Tassie dirt before boarding the ferry back to the big island tonight. Also rang 4WD systems to discuss my Lokka issues. Going to drop in and let them have a look at it when we get to Adelaide in a couple of days. It's making a huge banging sound when the car goes right hand down. Been in now for 8500km and making the noise for about 2000km.
