Found an interesting comment in a back issue of 4wd Monthly (June 2007) where in the report on the changes with the introduction of the D4D they mention "The hi-tech material used on the dash and the uprated soundproofing"
Maybe it just might be that the later Prado vesions will not have this problem.
Time will tell I guess.

Thanks guys, I am now suffering from OCD. Everytime I get in my car I find myself examining the dash obsessively! Hairs and dust are starting to look like cracks! So far no cracks, touch wood.

count me in the list.. a 2003 GX model.

I've been peeping at other prados here, some owners went to an extend of painting over their dash to cover the cracks.
A complaint has been made to my local toyota agent here and according to them, they will write a report to HQ but dependable on their feedback. Looking at the economic climate with toyota running production at a loss, i dont think they will replace it.. :cry:

In the meantime, 3 ton glue seems to be the only solution. sigh.

Rang Fair Trading the other day, they suggested I try to Negotiate through the customer service 1800 # again, being out of warranty they said not a lot they could do, however they seemed sympathetic and said I could take my own legal action if I wished............I think i am losing interest real fast :evil: .Maybe they could use my dash for the next Test match and tony Greg could examine the cracks ?
My pics look the same as the early ones.

Can anyone recommend a well fitting/protecting dash mat? I have just got myself a 2008 silver D4D (well, soon to be, deposit down) and want to keep the dash protected.. EDIT: Used a place called exactfit. It was exactly the fit I expected
Cost was about $55 from memory and after about 4months it still looks great.

I have 03 GXL with a cracked dash too, coming from the right vent across the top of the instrument panel to the centre vent

Hi Guys ,
Just like to add to the list.
2003 GXL crack over instrument panel and a short one near drivers side vent on top.
I have had a dash cover on since new and the steering wheel was replaced under warranty as the leather went funny when it was still quite young.

I spoke to a vinyl repair guy today and was told it could be welded but may still crack again. Vinyl welding at a motor trimmer.

$80 for about 4 inches and would have to remove the windscreen myself.

What happens if the air bag goes off? Wouldn’t they need to replace the dash anyway? I suppose that wouldn't be all that they would need to replace.
Anyways I will see if it gets any worse first.

A crack around 10 inches long above the glove box ..... right about where the airbag deploys from.

Maybe its just Toyo's way of making sure the airbag can deploy through all that dash material :lol: :lol:

Please sign me up in the cracked dashboard club, I would imagine there are hundreds if not a thousand or two possible applicants around Australia alone.
The dash in my 03' GXL is starting to look like an NT road map, long straights with nothing in between.
My Prado has only done 70,000km and it lives under cover all the time.
I work at a remote mine site in the NT so my 4WD only comes out every second week.
I have a dash mat fitted and fortunately it hasn't cracked under the mat.
Unfortunately, it has cracked just about everywhere else.
I had the Prado serviced last week at my local dealer in Palmerston just out of Darwin.
When I picked it up I spoke to the service manager about the cracking around the fascia edges etc.
He acknowledged that there was a problem with some vehicles but because my Prado was out of warranty, there was "Sweet F All" I could do about it.
Approximate pricing for a new dashboard fascia and labour to remove and replace it was around the $2,000 mark.
I can always have it plastic welded but then I'd have to sell or trade it quickly before it cracked again.
Maybe I'll just trade it back to the uncooperative Toyota dealer and let them deal with it.
That tube of black silastic is looking mighty tempting though.

Warranty or not, I am thinking these dashboards should be replaced at Toyota's cost as it is obviously a design problem, looking at the numbers listed even just here.
