I wish John (Mr Toyota) Laws, was still on the air.
It would have been interesting to see how he would have handled so many angry Prado owners.
Most likely he would have got the person to give their details off the air so that the listening audience would be completely oblivious to what was going on with a Toyota vehicle.
Are there any solicitors out there in Prado land ?
Do the owners of these defective vehicles have a chance of making a claim against Toyota even though most of the warranties have expired ?

Hi, just thought I would add my name to the cracked dash list. I have an 03 T/D GXL and my crack runs right across the dash from one window vent to the other.
I have been in contact with Toyota and my local dealer with the best offer of repair being $2000 from the dealer (Toyota not interested in the slightest)
Has anyone looked into the possible issues in regard to the operation of the passenger side airbag as my dash has cracks in that area?
There might be a case against the big T if this could be proved

I assume that when the air bag is deployed the dash would need replacing so I don't think that a few cracks would be a issue.
What we need is a spray on filler or a poly filler type product that would withstand the harsh tempertures.We could always cover the dash in crush velvet like they use to do on the old Sandman Panel vans.

Add my 03 Prado to the list. Have a crack just to the right of the glove box with a smaller one branching off. I am not game to lift the dash cover to see whether there are others.

Could it be that some dash boards which are now cracked have been treated with products like Armour All? Some dealers use this stuff to make their used vehicles more presentable, although personally I've never liked the shiny glossy finish that Armour All creates.

I've read that Armour All has fallen out of favour with a lot of car enthusiasts because it actually dries out the plastics, and this could possibly explain why some people are experiencing cracks, but not all....





Any comments from owners who have got a cracked dash? If you've bought brand new, then the Armour All theory probably won't be the case, unless you do use it!

Our crack on the passenger side dash is growing a bit bigger so we contacted a bloke up here who makes a living out of fixing stuff like this. He believes that it is caused by getting in a hot car and turning the air conditioner on. The sudden drop in temperature around the vents causing the cracking. I don't know whether it is true or not but it does make some sense to me. When we got this car it was from down south in a cooler area and it had the smallest tiny crack near the aircon vent. Brought it up to North Queensland in the winter and as it has gotten hotter and hotter the crack has gotten worse and worse. Whatever the cause he is coming to give me a quote next week. The pictures on his website of some of the repairs he has done look pretty impressive.

Cracks appearing in my GXL 03 dashboard. Small one above the clock, but the other right across the rim of the instrument consol. This vehicle is garaged indoors and spends little time off-road so it can't be due to vibrations, or extreme heat. Only 80,000km on the clock - I mentioned it to the service dept at the 80k service last week. "It can get pretty hot inside" was about all he could offer and recalled the last time he asked for a quote it cost $2,500 to replace. I've never seen a dashboard in any type of vehicle crack like this. Not what I'd expect from a Toyota !
There goes the resale value.

Hi guys i have a 10/05 just had a look all is fine , the dash is still soft it is parked in doors. For the ones with cracked dashes, is the dash hard if you push it with you finger ?.When i picked up the truck new there was some dash squeak. But buy the time we got back to Sydney from Alice Springs 6 weeks later the dash noise was so bad the noise would drive you insane, the dealer fixed it the mechanic said that there is not a lot of clerance for parts to expand etc hence the noise. The dealer fixed it said it was a normal fault.

You can add my dash to the cracked dash list as well. It is just starting a third crack at the moment. I have done an out of warranty claim with Toyota without success, and am trying to get it done under another warranty.
Anyway i wont be holding my breath. Will keep you posted.

Well, I've done my dash too!! :x :x 04 VX complete with NaturGard from new and dashmat from new.

Large crack appeared last week from vent to 2/3 way across instrument hood. Will be interesting when I find out what Mr Toyota has to say Wed when booked in for a 130K service. The fella behind the desk said he has seen 3 this month with cracks and 2 will be repaired/replaced. I (thankfully) have a 6 year extended warranty and would anticipate a positive outcome. Will let you know...

Thought you should know that I had the same problem with my '03 GXL a few months out of warranty. Terry Shields and Windsor Toyota would do nothing.
I ended up writing to John Conomos who is the Chairman of TMCA. Result = one new dealer fitted dashboard free of charge.
It pays not to take no for an answer. I hope you guys have/had similar success. Cheers, Mike

How long ago and do you have a copy of the letter? A mate has a bad crack in his dash and it's about an 03?
