  • Re: Cracked dashboard

    Now we are ALL worried.

One can only assume that the dashes haven't changed since the 03/04 models and ours will all be the same after 6 yrs of life.

Oops I shouldn't have said that

Now you have said it is probably going to happen!! Dam you!!

Seriously.... I think you have raised the point that everyone here is hoping will not happen. Yes.... everyone here with a later year model has been reading the woes of the earlier 120's haven't we.
I for one am seriously hoping that the manufacturer sorted this problem before mine was built. I would be really really really really pissed off if the damage as shown on the previous posts showed up on mine.
Good luck for all with the dash cancer problem.

What do you reckon the chances are of the 150 dash starting to crack in five years time? Has anyone heard of any other Toyota models cracking up?

          just a suggestion guys.
In Sydneys Daily Telegraph on Fridays is the motoring section with a column called Ask Smithy. This is where people write in with questions regarding all things automotive. There is always someone writng in with Ford Territory brake hose problems etc. If a couple write in about the dash board issue Smithy usually contacts the manufacturer seeking answers on the readers behalf. This will then lead to more exposure to Prado owners who are not members here and possibly Toyota might suffer from some embarresment and do something (probably not but anyway  )

lukey2830's dash is an absolute disgrace to say the least. Toyota should be absolutely ashamed to say it belongs to one of their 'quality built' vehicles. No need to even ask the question about this vehicle being unroadworthy.
Yes MDS69 do contact as many motoring journalists and automotive bodies (NRMA etc) as possible. Toyota might deny any responsability for this manufacturing fault, but the more publicity we can give this problem, the more chance we can get some resolve.
            Fight on!!!

Well I must admit that I am a bit hesitant to wait around and see if it is going to happen to later models. I have someone who wants to buy my car and up until now I have been very reluctant to sell. What with cracking dashboards, blown engines, cracking inner guards, and weak rear diffs I feel like I am sitting on a time bomb which will be worth very little in a couple of years time. One thing is for sure, and that is my next car will definitely not be a Toyota.

Whoa.....Hang on Sleeky...... your sounding like one of my teenage daughters.....

Yes there is a small number of Prados with a serious dash problem.....BUT Cracked inner guards, Blown engines ........ come on, I've been on this forum for nearly 3 years and I can count on less than one hand how many blown engines and cracked inner guards have been reported out of the hundreds of thousands of Prado's on the road.

I still believe that the Prado is one of the best put together and built all round 4WD's on the road in Australia.

Nothing like an emotional outburst to get the heckles up. I appreciate that most of the other problems are relatively isolated. I am however, like most who have contributed to this thread incensed at Toyotas total lack of action on this issue and feel very much for those who have this problem. And I am not so sure that the cracked dash problem is all that small. I have looked at several 03/04 Prados recently and they all had cracks of different sizes in their dashboards and Darwin is not the only place where it gets hot and humid. Only time will tell if the problem has been fixed in later models.

Just wondering if anyone has noticed any cracks on other areas on their cars made from the same material as the dash. eg the top of the door trim.

That is really upsetting to see....... I just can not fathom what would cause a 6 year old dash to do that.

Touch wood...... but my 04 is still fine ...... (but I am starting to worry)
Holy crap mate..makes mine look insignificant, but its still cracked all the same. On the toyota roundabout as we speak and have just flicked another email off to aca. Keep up the fight guys!!

Well here we are coming up to 6 1/2 years since I purchased my '03 Prado and my wife '03 Corolla Conquest, in fact we picked them up on the same day. Purchased with extended warranty.

                          History to date

                          Corolla
2003 to 2008 relatively trouble free
2009 80k of city driving - replaced rear shocks (no warranty)
2010 Whole centre dash cluster container radio etc is falling out of the dashboard (no warranty)

                          Prado
2005 - Replaced steering wheel (cracking warranty)
2006 - Replaced fuel tank - detached baffles (warranty)
2008 - Replaced cracking dash (warranty after a fight)
2010 - Now baffles in fuel tank have detached again (no warranty)

Outcome - About to buy my wife a Subaru Forester and my next vehicle will be a Nissan Patrol - good riddance Toyota, I hope TMCA rot in hell. I'm keeping the Prado as an offroader an it will NEVER see another Toyota part.

I regularly get asked whether I am happy with my Prado by people considering purchasing one, I'm sure they all look at other manufacturers after a brief discussion with me.

Sleeky, all cars have their issues, toyota would be one of the best, after 23 years of various company cars most of them holdens(8), two nissans, one jeep and three toyota's, give me the toyota any day, the only car that has come close to the toyota's is the new mazda two we have just brought. Well built like the yota. With all these issues you mention i am suprised the prado still has such good resales value????

The cracked dashboards look horrendous and it is disgusting that Toyota offer no support for a problem that should have been fixed when HQ Holdens were on the showroom floors. But compared to the quality issues that, say, owners of late model Holdens and Fords are forced to endure, Prados are as near to perfect as you will get. I've had mates who have paid north of 60 grand for their dream XR8s only to find a range of problems that required repeated warranty claims. For example, exterior trim dropping off on a 12 month old example and brakes that needed machining every few thousand Ks. The trim was attached by a worm of roughly applied silicone, looked like it had been applied by a 6 year old

I've had a couple of Subarus and they were faultless.

Thanks Hutch. I know you are right. In fact this is my 5th Prado and I haven't personally experienced any of these problems with the exception of a questionable clutch in my current vehicle and the dashboard replaced under warranty twice in my 90 series. I have also had a couple of Pajeros along the way and had no real issues with them either. I guess I am a bit of a worry wart when it comes to protecting my investment as I have always had willing buyers for all of my vehicles. It really annoys me that once the 3 years is up you're on your own even when it is so obviously a manufacturing flaw. However I appreciate that all manufacturers do the same thing.
