Hi guys...we are still here..have had our DASH REPLACED...did a deal with our dealer so the car would not be unroadworthy and therefor affect the insurance also. The dealer is totally disgusted with tmc attitude but also says its pretty normal attitude to most claims. When asked about the warranty on the NEW DASH...guess what......only 12 mths...same goes for ANY new part...what a joke...it means it can now crack again in 12mths and back to square one again. Nobody seems to know if the compound in the new dash is any different to the ones already cracked. Tmc told us to get lost 3 times...A Current Affair i have given up on..sent pics etc twice and got no response at all...told them i knew of over 50 vehicles and still counting...still no response...racq LEGAL says the only way is for a class action but needs to be done with specialist lawyer in product warranty and consumer law...then its a matter of the costs involved as to how far it can go....legal opinion says we have a very strong case.
We have kept our old dash for evidence also. We are still out of pocket as we had to contribute to the replacement so will go back to tmc now and send them an invoice..even its just to piss them off.
It'll boil down to some type of court action I'm almost certain. I have a mate who bought a camper trailer that was so un-roadworthy it wasn't funny. That trailer could have killed someone, and maybe him too while he was towing it. Several qualified and respected mechanics have written reports saying the trailer should never have been licensed, and that the builder should be immediately stripped of their ability to allow further trailers onto the road. My point is that even under the weight of all this evidence the ACCC was powerless to help my mate at all. He did all the right things by gathering reports, getting the trailer looked at by ACCC approved testing houses etc etc etc. Got legal advice, researched and found some other people with the same problems with the same manufacturer. All came to nothing. In the end all the ACCC offered was a 'mediation' service between the involved parties. Since day one the camper trailer guy has told him to stick it with pretty colourful language. So that didn't work. At the end of the day it's my mate who has to take the trailer manufacturer to court at his own expense. The ACCC could do nothing for him, even though these trailers are dangerous and could easily kill someone. Joke? Completely........
And yes, we've both entertained the option of visiting him with baseball bats. He's still out there making trailers and selling them.... under a different company name now. But we know where he is...... We're decent people though and wouldn't usually do that type of thing.
Good luck though guys. I really do hope you get a good outcome.

I doubt whether A Current Affair would want to upset one of channel nines biggest advertisers. Ordinary but that is the way they seem to work. Good luck with it all. Keep making noise.
Good find, Allan. I think this a fantastic opportunity to get some great exposure on this issue. This news network includes print media such as The Courier-Mail, The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, The Advertiser, The Mercury and the NT News as well as many regional publications.
I suspect the more people Graham Smith hears from the more likely this issue might be covered in the print media.
Regarding the whole Channel 9 thing - I had a Ch9 News Producer/Reporter contact me a little while ago following my email to A Current Affair (who passed it on). I'll follow up and see if I can find out how their investigation is going.
I too have just expressed my concerns with Smithy. I have a 2004 GXL 4ltr that has the same cracks as mentioned in other posts. I have only had it the last two years and have noticed the cracks only with in the last 6-8 months or so. Sinced i have had it it has had a dash mat on the whole time so i don't understand : :?
2004 Silver GXL, Auto, 4lt Petrol, BF GOODRICH tyres, 17" factory alloys, hella spotties, uniden UHF, factory bullbar and side steps------just a newbie to all this!
TMCA now appear to be having to contemplate responses to Channel 9 News, Graham Smith at carsguide.com.au/Herald Sun and potentially the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland soon. Let's hope this is just the beginning!
If you're affected by this and haven't posted on Smithy's page/s yet please do so.
Surprise, Surprise, Still no response from TMC. I guess TMC now have a new slogan "Ignorance is the best policy". ops: ops: ops:
On a slight change of subject. Two workers at our local Toyota dealership had a bit of a dust up last week. One was armed with a hammer, the other with a screw driver. End result - one in hospital with a punchered lung and the other being charged by the Police. Must be a great place to work!!!!!

I've read through most of the thread,
I don't have a prado yet, still shopping for one. I have looked at a couple with cracks accross the dash, and was turned away by them, and now I'm glad I didn't overlook them.
Is anyone able to send me a copy of the letter they recieved from Toyota stating that the car would be unroadworthy with this issue? If so then the caryards shouldn't be selling these cars?
Or at least it would get a fair sized discount.

Hi timmay5.7
I think you will find its only the cracking around the airbag area that makes the vehicle unroadworthy. Cracking above the gauge area is not unroadworthy, but in saying that, once the cracking appears in that area it is almost guaranteed to start cracking across the airbag area.
Steer clear of these vehicles. Also note that there is no warning of cracking starting, so you might buy a vehicle with no cracks in the dash and within a short period of time the cracking could start. Pot luck i guess.
I hope you find a good one.
Cheers

Once again TMC have avoided responsability on this issue.

wonder who "sponsors" smithy...Toyota?? unfortunately most people with this problem cant be bothered doing anything about it. If every single person with a cracked dash got together and put some money together, taking TMC to court shouldn't be out of question. This cannot be won by a single person but a group of people can do it
