A big thank you to everybody for sharing all your info on the cracked dash issue. We took all the info from this thread to our Toyota dealer (Mackay) and got our dash photographed by the service dept and 2 days later got a phone call asking us when we wanted to book in our 06 Prado to get the new dash fitted free of charge!!!! Nothing for us to pay!! Also getting the bullbar brackets done for the recall. I told them straight up that if they came back with anything that cost more than $300 that we would appeal the decision - didn't have to!!

Im sorry to say, but that sucks (from my perspective), I did exactly the same but they wont budge from $1300 total cost to me to do it for my 03.
Thats after appeal.

Another Cracked Dash

I too, am having 'talks' with Toyota. I came to Sunshine Toyota because so many of the Prado guys had success. Micheal, in the Service Dept, forwarded the claim and the answer back was Toyota had run out of authorisations and wasn't doing any more goodwill, Out of Warranty claims. Disappointed didn't even come close to covering my reaction.
Micheal said to ring Customer Care; who took all the details; got back to Sunshine and asked them to submit an appeal. They did (not happy about it) and Customer Care also send what I told them and we wait for an answer. This week supposedly.
Micheal did say that if it is rejected I cannot ask again. Bit sus when you read all the previous results.

I don't know how I can insist that the dealer does something else if the answer is NO.

I did claim while I was in Albany and got the 50% offer but the offer was going to expire in a month. The catch there was, due to the Tsunami, parts would not arrive in Oz before the expiry date. So how could I accept?
My case, is made worse, it seems because of this previous claim.

I will add what I am told asap.

I was at the local dealer getting a filter today and the spare parts girl says to me "oh, Ive got a dash here for you"!!!!!
The total invoice cost of the dash was $1089.
They are "very generously by their good will gesture" letting me off on half the parts cost so thats $544.50
They still want $1300 for the job so that means they are expecting to charge me $755.50 for the labour!!!
That, Im afraid to say, SUCKS!

Told them Im not thinking about doing it until I return from the Flinders anyway, all I need is for them to have stuffed it up while Im in the Flinders!

I have been arguing with Toyota for the past three weeks and the final result is a refusal to consider any kind of claim.
The official reason ' .. no claims will be considered for vehicles older than 7 years.'
This is despite the fact that the 120 series from 2003 to at least 2008 is having problems with their dash. Its not a one off but an endemic problem with the quality of the materials.
I have forwarded a claim to the NSW Consumer Affairs and will await their answer. I found a blog about a Nissan 3.0 litre who had an Out of Warranty claim for his engine through the Victorian Consumer mob who received a new motor and $1000 compensation! He was I think 3 years out of warranty with some highish kms on it.

I will let this Forum know the progress. Could be a while...

Got mine fitted, total cost after a bit of negotiating was $1095 :-(.
Oh well, its done now and looks good so best forget about it!

Finally found time to drop into Sunshine Toyota... spoke to Tanya, she came out and took photos of my 04 GXL with its wall to wall - top to bottom cracking, and said she'd send it off.
Called back a week later and said that Toyota would supply at 1/2 price, so $915. I didn't take the call so not sure if that's fitted. I'll call back Monday to find out, and to add that if they are admitting its rubbish by going half, then perhaps they should go all in!

Got mine done at Bridge Toyota today. Initially they told me it would be $900, when i went to collect it they tried to charge me $1080. When i reminded them of the previous conversation they changed it back to $900 without question. I had to pay half parts and full labour.

I think it's $900 well spent it looks like a completly different car now. It might actually motivate me to keep the poor girls clean!!!

Can you tell me the age of your vehicle. I have a meeting with the CTTT soon and I am collecting info on which models Toyo is repairing and which he is not (apart from mine!)

I've got the same cracking in passenger side dash as reported here, seems to be getting worse. Its an 04 GXL.
Made inquiries at Mildura Toyota this week, not really interested as the service manager said Toyota wouldn't do anything.

For those interested, have a look at these pics of a cracking dash. I am not sure what is holding the thing on the vehicle. It is terrible.

04 GXL and its cracked from left of centre console across top of instrument panel all the way down the right side. Its got a dash matt and not 100% sure of history, but id put it down to faulty/inferior product by toyota before i assumed car had had a hard life!

I have just notice cracking above the instrument cluster.. Did anyone come up with a solution to stop it spreading? Moved up to Darwin 1 year ago and now I think the heat is getting to it.

Dashboard cracking is very common where I'm based (Dubai, Middle East). It's definitely heat related as summers here tend to hit the mid to high 40's in celsius. One common solution to prevent it is by getting some good tinting done on the windows. Another solution is to put some carpet type of material on the dashboard - this prevents the sunlight from hitting it directly.
