  • The thing your missing is the dashboard pad should last alot longer then 4 to 5 years. We are now getting 07 models with split/cracked dash's. The thing is for example my old hilux had done 300 thou was an 89 model and never had a crack on the dash and did virtually 3 laps of OZ so it did some hard klms, was subjected to some extreme heat, rutted roads, off road etc no dash issues. If it got one now would I spew ?? no because of the klms its done and age, would be 23 years old now. We are talking about vehicles that have never seen off road, been garaged, have dash mats, sunvisors up during the day and they are cracking due to shithouse material used by Toyota. If the product was ok we would be seeing them last like my old hilux did. If your 150 was just on 5 years old and the dash started to break up like a violet crumble Im sure you would be pissed right off to as well having to fork out approx $1500 and up for a new dash and labour on top of the 60k plus you payed to buy it in the first place, and would be extremely hard to sell in some cases AND the thing that is pissing people off is its not just a few or a couple its heaps of them. Yes they may be out of warranty (most are after 3 years) some people take out the extra cover but still no excuse for Toyota just to wipe it. At the end of the day the dash board material is made out absolute shit material and when some one gets blinded (I hope to god not) but if it does happen I hope the person sues the absolute arse off toyota and has all this here on PP (what 56 pages) to back them up....... Im lucky at the moment as my 05 is still ok but I will be one of the other PP members on here jumping up and down as well if it does go and I will be taking and pushing it a lot harder till its out there on the current affair shows for all to know about and what scientific evidence do Toyota have that there would be no harm to passengers or drivers from the dash material. And another thing my mate is an inspector and said if he had a prado come in with a split dash where the airbag is (passengers side) its a defect so he wouldnt give it a pink slip for rego. He said how can Toyota not do anything about it due to the safety issues, should be a recall, its safety related due to airbag and possible deployment issues, he said like the dash particles ripping through the airbag on deployment. I have no idea on any of this as Im not an engineer and dont know all the legal crap and things that are classed as defective.....Cheers Steve

    • Once again Steve well said mate! I'm just annoyed with Toyota for just palming people off as they know it's a problem yet they do nothing which is the really annoying bit and as for safety with kids in the car or adults for that matter it concerns me. I don't expect that if I went to Toyota in a 80 series cruiser that had done over 300klms and say the dash is cracked I want a new one but my Prado has only done 100klms and been garaged all it's life ( as I bought it of my old man mate ) and has a dash mat for this to happen! I will be ringing Toyota head office again Monday and printing all these pages off and faxing it through to them. God help me if nothing gets done I'll be on the tv making a scene......... I cleaned my car just last night and while wiping the dash over bits literally peeled off and you think I'm not pissed off about it! When and if the time comes I might ask all you out there who have them problem to contact me so we can take it further

              • Please add my vehicle to the CRACKED DASHBOARD LIST.
My 2003 Grande has a crack across the instrument panel. As yet none has appeared on the passenger side. I approached the dealer i purchased it from (Grand Motors in Southport) this morning and they took photos and noted my service book service dates on their paperwork. I am pleased to say it reveals regular 5000k servicing but what that has to do with the dashboard just escapes me.
This afternoon I received a call from Grand Motors stating that TMCA had "denied my claim". No explanation just said it was "denied". They suggested I contact TMCA myself.
I have since emailed TMCA seeking clarification. I have also followed the advice of others here on the forum re notification to various agencies both state, federal, motoring and consumer organisations.
I will keep you all advised re the outcome(s).
Coincidentally I had to get my CB radio fixed today and the repairer noted the crack in the dash and commented he had seen a few Prados lately with the same crack and others with cracks to the passenger side.

                • Excuse my ignorance, regarding this isue but i dont have the time to read the 51 pages regarding this issue. I also have a cracked dashboard on my 04 GXL and assumed given the fact its 8 years old its a matter of stiff #@$@ unless i pay to get it repaired myself. Has anyone actually had any success with recourse to Toyota or any State/Federal bodies concerning the issue? If not has anyone paid to have the entire dash repaired or fixed?

                  • A.J a mate of mine had his done by the dealership here in Darwin just before xmas............he had purchased the vehicle off of them (04 grande) and as part of the deal at purchase it was to replace the dash..........anyway when he went to pick it up they told him he had a $1800 bill.............which he promptly told them to go jump in the lake!..........they sorted it out and he did not pay.....lucky

Any way that would be what you would be looking at i would suspect.

Rang Toyota HQ to follow up on my first complaint about the 1st crack and told them about the new crack. I was advised to bring it into the dealer for another assessment. Also, the person on the phone told me that last week, a notice went out in Toyota to have the older models that were assessed previously to be re-assessed. So in it goes tomorrow to the dealer for another photo shoot.

I just asked a Toyota dealer that I know whether this has happened, their response:

"Interestingly we have a Prado in for service today, that the customer claimed the same thing, that Toyota were now paying 100% on older Dashes.
*****did ring TMCA CEC to check, and was advised that nothing has changed. TMCA still do advise customers to go to a Dealer and claims will be considered on a case by case basis as previously.

I have also searched the online Bulletin portal where any bulletin if issued would be available, and there is nothing there on Prado dash covers unfortunately.

If anything does change in the next little while I will let you know

Sounds like another brush off by TMCA

                              • Well, the guy on the phone from TMCA asked me when the 1st assessment was done and I said a few weeks ago. He then said that there was a new notice last week and asked me to go into the dealer for the 2nd crack. He said that the older Prados can be re-assessed but didn't say anything about 100% paid replacement. Hopefully, I get better news this time round as the crack is now in the passenger airbag area.
