  • There must be some other dealer you can use reasonably close to you, no ?? I suppose the 50%'s not to bad but $720 labour phew, and I bet the arse's will charge the maximum to, and I agree I wouldnt want to be the guinea pig either not just cause of the cost, but for the fact it will probably be an apprentice (no offence to any apprentices out there) but can bet they wouldnt be supervised like there suppose to be so you will end up with broken clips, screws left out, and been a grande with all the climate air and extra bits and pieces can bet my balls on it you wouldnt get it back without some thing not working properly of at all............Cheers Steve

    • Hi Steve M,

      Actually they offered 5yrs warranty/17500kms.
I even upgraded my cover to a premium one.
Hopefully they will cover this issue.
      Thanks for the inputs.

      • Hi,

I recently had my dash replaced due to cracking. Toyota paid 75% of parts and I had to pay the remainder of parts plus labour which all up cost me $534.00. I then rang department of fair trading and lodged a complaint with them now they are looking into it.

        • Popeye,
What year model is your Prado and how bad are the cracks? Also which dealer did the job?

          • Gday,

I have an 2004 GXL and the cracks ran around the bottom of the n/s srs to the centre vents then then started again and ran around the instrument cluster the o/s.
I had Stewart Toyota at Kirrawee in Sydney do the job

            Cheers

            • I just rang Stewart Toyota Kirrawee and they quoted me $650-700.

              • Tell them you know of someone who recently had it done and they paid $367 for the dash and $167 for labour.

                • I did and they told me that they must have got "assistance" from Toyota.

I had already rung Toyota CEC earlier to query the labour charges and the lady said that there is nothing they could do with what dealers charges. I asked if there was an allocated replacement time to do the job as there is one on every part instruction sheet I have seen and she said no. I find this hard to believe as I do this exact thing at work, writing out maintenance instructions and allocating times to perform every single step.

My bullbar recall took 3 days to complete and I bet Toyota is only paying the dealer the allocated time to do the work.

                  • Thats unbelievable. I would be happy to give you a copy of my invoice to take to them.
The process for me went like this, saw an article in the telegraph auto section about an 04 prado with a cracked dash. The way it read was toyota were dealing withthem on a case by case basis as they were presented to them. I rang on the monday told them about this, they said to bring it in and the warranty guy will have a look. He had a look, took some photos and submitted them to toyota. That afternoon I got a call saying that Toyota would pay 75% of parts and I would have to pay the remaining on parts plus labour and that totalled $534.00

                    • Well you are very fortunate to get that price. I can only try my best with my dealer now as the work can only be done at the dealer that submitted the claim. This part is unreasonable too!

                      • What dealer are you going through

                        • Peter Kittle in Salisbury, SA.
My bullbar recall was done at Stewart Toyota Rockdale and that work is now going to be rectified at Peter Kittle because after 3 days, they still didn't get it right.

                          • Just got my quote from Newtown Toyota in Perth after going through Toyota Customer Care. They came back and offered 50% discount on parts and full labour charge, so $1500 was the figure stated to me. Must admit I'm totally pissed off. I have brought 5 brand new toyota 4x4's in the past 15 years and also recommended and ordered over 500 new Toyota 4x4's and this is the treatment that I get, unbelievable. Loyalty is totally lost, now that vehicle is devalued by $3-4000.

Now, when we think about it, there must be an opportortunty to force a national recall. As my dash is cracked where the airbag is, there must some safety issue where the airbag doesn't deploy effectively or in fact deploys, but fragments incorrectly. Is there an automotive engineer or some technical advice out there, whereby we can understand more about the effects of the dashboard on airbag deployment.

It would be good to understand how we can make Toyota accountable.

Regards, future Nissan or European SUV driver.

Are you able to send through a copy of your invoice so I can further challenge my dealer please.

                              • I spoke to ACCC last Friday. If everyone with a cracked dashboard can ring them up and lodge a report there is a chance that something can be done, especially if you bought your Prado off a dealer, be it new or second hand. The ACCC is powerless for me as mine was bought privately, but they still want to hear from more owners.
