  • Late model stereo in older 120

    Hi Guys

After reading here about options for stereos, It would appear that putting a late model head unit in with BT and aux input is the way to go.

    I have spotted a head unit from a 2009 Hilux .

Does this fit with no issues at all, or do I need to find a Prado head unit (Its a double din).

The new one has steering wheel control support. Can a new steering wheel be added to my 2003 120 Prado with the controls - is the wiring in place to support the controls?

Does any one know if the BT head units support audio of BT, or is it just phone calls.

    Thanks

    Mick

No drama at all, connectors are the same.

I'm running '10 head unit from a Hilux in my '06. BT my iPhone for tunes.

Steering wheel controls I can't comment on, but I reckon it would be more trouble than it is worth.

That url does not work and a Google search does not yield anything close.

Sounds like steering wheel controls are too hard. I was hoping I could buy a used wheel with the controls and put that it instead

          I need some help here.

I have put in the new head unit and it is working fine. I connected the fast wire cable that gives you a video camera input and did some tests (I dont have a camera connected yet). By going into diagnostic mode on the head unit you can see the status of the vehicle inputs.

Because I had the original 6 stack CD player installed, the speed, handbrake and reverse sgnals were not connected, but the 5 pin plug was there ready to go. I plugged that in both through the fast wire loom and directly into the head unit and neither seem to produce a desired signal.

I pulled the plug and put my meter on the plug and sure enough there is nothing there - when the handbrake is on it should ground the pin and that is not happening. When the car is in reverse the pin should go to 12V and I get nothing. Speed is difficult to check as the dash is apart and I have to try and drive with the meter so I did not do that, but some other priminary tests show nothing.

So this would indicate that the plug is not connected at the "other end" - problem is I don't know where the other end is. Is there a connector that I need to plug in somewhere?

          Thanks

          Mick

Has anyone come across this before?

What signal exactly are you trying to find? What deck are you fitting? Unless it's a nav unit the speed wire isn't all that nessesary all it does is turn the volume up slightly the faster you go... I don't like that
Steering controls is pretty easy late steering wheel on but would have to run the 3? I think wires back to the deck

              oops this unit - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...00-%2826028%29

It is a Satnav and hence does need those signals present to function correctly. The indicated connector is the picture is the connector in question.

Can't find my wiring details now, but when I did my unit it the reverse/spd/camera wires were all in the same plug, the spd won't give you any signal until the speedo is moving

Yeah the plug is there and there are wire with the right colours, just no signals as expected.

A drive up and down the driveway gave me nothing on the speed signal wire either.

Thats why I am wondering if there is something else I need to do/connect to get the signals there

Na it should work like that... Might be that the car needs to go faster... I'll try my wiring diagram
