Fine for the hwy but in the bush expect it to jump over 20L/100 as you need to use the right boot for the 'power'
      That's a BIG statement..

After 60,000 kms of ownership of a 5 speed auto V6 GXL...

The worst I have ever seen in the bush, loaded right up (fridge/swag/cooking gear/tents/recovery gear/tool bags/jacking plate/beer/wife/kids/toys) with tyres deflated to about 24 psi, in a lifted Prado with all terrain tread tyres and heaps of extra gear mounted under the bonnet, under the truck and in the cabin.. my worst off road figure was 17.5 litres per hundred, up in the Barrington Tops NP. That was on standard grade unleaded rubbish...

Not Quite over 20 litres per hundred kms
      :!:
Big statement but you proved my point, the D4D will do 10 on the hwy and 10 in the bush fully loaded

Mind you my patrol does 25 anywhere

rrp has the diesel at $1000 extra. up until latest model they were the same price...

Disco 3 values the diesel at $6-7k more than the petrol... they were around the same price when i was looking for the Prado but could only get petrol....

My worst that I can remember is 15.2 L per 100. Headwinds and towing a car on a trailer in hilly terrain.

BP only. Have petrochemical engineer mates who do testing now and again and it is always the highest octane.

Those are obviously hwy figures and not when the vehicle is loaded up.

ULP vs PULP. It's still an inconclusive result, isn't it? If I were driving a modified engine, yes I'd only pour PULP in. Otherwise for a stock engine, the ULP should give similar economy. The only difference is that ULP is more sulphuric which fouls up the injectors over time.

I've tuned a few engines before, and irrespective of vehicle, I find the PULP only helps to offset against knock... but does little for economy gains compared to ULP. Assuming the (ULP) fuel is not dodgey, of course, which is a separate issue.

                      well

well reading all this would confuse the hell out of you if you are looking at getting a Prado......whatever you buy in the end you have to live with it, for a while at least...some like diesel, some like petrol and some like auto...all personal choice......I think it is great that we have choice.

the more I read of Prado fuel consumption I can see why it is called a luxury car......it is expensive to run.....period. the new ones are more economical but still cost a packet compared to more economical venhicles.

I guess if we want a prado then we put up with the fuel consumption. it is a heavy car and it chews juice. use it hard and it chews even more.

Seems like 15l/100 kms is not uncommon and 11 l/100km is good going with the older diesel. petrol it all depends on what you are towing.

If I was worried about fuel consumption I would go back to my old Rodeo 2.8 diesel...sitting at 100km/h towing the camper trailer around Oz she averaged 9l/100km and ran without any hiccups. Good truck.

But for comfort the Prado is the go....but it does cost more to run I am afraid.

My figures are averaged in the city mainly. On Hwy it constantly gets into the 10's with 3 - 4 Pax.

I find at least a 6% gain on economy on PULP. If you do a search on these forums you will also see we managed almost a 20-30 KW gain Simply by changing a vehicle on a dyno from ULP to PULP as well. No other mods, just a fuel change.
My first couple tanks were ULP and it took about 6 tanks of premuim before I could notice the physical change, more power, better economy etc. I really should wack it on the Dyno....

Even towing a WRX on a trailer with about 200 kilo of fuel and spares/tools it pulled 14.5 l per 100 between Mt Gambier & Adelaide.
Not sure why but this Prado has always been very economical since I bought it.
Also remember, this is a near stock Grande, Nothing added to increase weight or change the aerodynamics. This itself is a big factor it seems.
I am also a rather conservative driver (In the Prado).. Different story when I use the Supercharged SS though  ....

I dont agree Prado should be under any Luxury tax !! after all its Prado,s dont drink like the volvo x90, BMW x5 etc which its average 21 litres per 100ks !! and thats highway driving !! I feel over time there will be more Bio Diesel fuel on the market which is cheaper to produce and runs fine if it made correctly ( i know A recycling cooking oil company thats runs all there Vehicle on Bio and they are happy ) they just smell like hots chips when travelling behind them lol !

at the end of the day this debate of what engine etc It reallys come down to your choice I strongly recommend test driving both engine,s if possible both city and highway driving and if you plan on towing I would probably lean towards the Diesel ( you will get better fuel consumption as well engine life generally speaking) on another Note the diesel is just as quick as the petrol , it may be only a couple of sec difference which is nothing for Australian roads, ( maybe something to consider in Europe )
