    Re: deisel vs petrol

Heck! I never thought I'd hear someone saying that again! All those stories about how diesel in Australia will always be more expensive than petrol from now on. It just goes to show that we are never told the truth when it comes to fuel pricing in Aus. I suppose it could be due to the global credit crisis though creating unexpected conditions. Whatever it is, hopefully it keeps going and gets Diesel down to a really decent price.

Today, at Caltex IFS in Robina, Gold Coast...

      Diesel 115.9
      Unleaded 117.9

For just a moment, we diesel owners can glow in the knowledge... cheaper at the pump and cheaper to run :!:

Last time I saw that, I was a child!!!

      Cheers,

        Re: deisel vs petrol

I guess this just shows how serious the downturn in demand for diesel in places like China and India is: If the reason given for higher diesel prices was accurate in the first place:- high demand in diesel to oil the wheels of construction and heavy industry in these tiger economies. In a way it's good news for us but also bad news because of how this will drag down our economy due to our reliance on selling overseas what we dig out of our ground.

Certainly the diesel price doesn't seem to bounce up and down like petrol so hopefully it'll still be low the next time I need to fill up (which is soon - I've already done 1000 kays on this tank ).

I suspect the inversion in prices has more to do with the supply issues with unleaded. As soon as the supply is sorted out... actually as soon as it is sorted out, the stations get a chance to make even more margin until eventually everyone cries foul and they reduce the price to where it should be again.

            Inversion in prices?

Petrol $117.9 versus diesel $134.9 (Kalgoorlie), less 4c litre with your Woolies docket.

            Perth diesel average $123/litre.

                    Re: deisel vs petrol

Having done the diesel vs petrol thing on every car I have got over the last 10 years [every 18 month to 2 yrs change over] the diesel has only stacked up twice to be close to the petrol in running cost over its life, and by the time I spent what was needed to make it go like a petrol it was still behind, though I did several simpson trips, canning trip, in the 2 years of that vehicle, so it went some way to repaying itself because of this.

The Prado stacked up as a runout for a new model, which made the TX manual they had on the lot for 5 months cheaper than a GL by the time I drove it away, so up front cost was lowered over its life.

Factors over a vehicles life are, interest on lease of extra cost of diesel option, extra servicing, extra fuel filters, % of time fuel is dearer than the other in its life cycle, and the vehicles power and torque for its required use.

Other factors to consider are, how much you like smelling like the fuel your car runs on after filling, wether you like the stuff on your shoes from having to wealk near the pump, wearing gloves so the nozzle doesnt get the fuel weeping from it on your hands, and how muh the other driver of the vehicle may enjoy this also

Now, I have decided to divide it up a,little, so my every day car is now very fuel efficient, gets into the 9's per 100km hwy, 11's to 12's around town normally, can get up to 14 lt per 100km round town if being driven spiritedly, but gets 600-700km per 70lt tank regularly.

Its also 6.0 of U.S alloy V8, making 270kw and 530nm of torque in a Aussie 2 door sports car [Holden VE SSV ute]

My 4wd is a 4.5 lt multi valve supercharged, running 37" tyres and weighing in loaded over 3.5 tonne. It makes nearly 200kw and 600nm at the rear wheels, get around 15.8 lt per 100km hwy, but can use up to 40 lt per 100km if driven really hard, but for less than 10,000km a year, to have the extra power, and torque, and all the extra's, it averages out at less than $20 a week to drive the powerful petrol 4wd than a turbo diesel unit

I elected to pay the extra $20 a week

Another thing to consider is what are the people driving when you go away travelling together?

I mostly travel with mates who have diesels so now that I too have swapped to diesel we have the extra piece of mind that our fuel needs are common and can help each other out if needed.

I've stopped worrying too much about how much it's going to cost to get anywhere - just do it!

I also have a V8 Shelby Cobra replica. I don't care how much it costs to fill up. The "bang for my buck" value is always extremely high and it only comes out once or so a month anyway.

Ah ha... This is the rub. If you go over the whole lot is at full price! You must stop before the 150 limit is reached, not a bit more. That is why I gave my warning but, hey, do it see what happens.
