  • metalic sound when accelerating

4ltr v6 120 series 230,000 ks, hi guys after using 2 tanks of e10, 360 ltrs approx, i have produced a metallic sound in my engine, it happens when i accelerate but when i put my foot down it goes away it might also be something about these engines aswell but i know the GR-FE's are good im thinking it might be comming from my throttle body but im not sure, after all im no machanic thats why i ask these questions, if i can find an easy answer i can fix it myself, cheers for any advice and happy 4wdrivin. also i have stopped using e10 and will never ever use it again.

That is an easy fix as your engine is pinging (Premature detonation) due fuel detonating before it is supposed too!

Put 95 or 98 in the tank (Higher octane) is less volatile (More stable) and detonates when it is supposed to and you will actually get better fuel consumption and smoother/ cleaner running engine!

E10 is ethanol 10% ... Personally not worth the saving IMHO and attacks plastics/ Rubber seals on older engines that are not designed to specifically run on E10

    Cheers

I would not put that shit in any of my cars. Even my wife's brand new car is ethanol approved but only run it on 98. Prado I run 91 if I can't get that then I run 95. They can stick that ethanol..... Cheers Steve

Thanks fellas, that was what I thought in theory, was hopping the real fuel would re-lubricate. I took my car for a run down to byron bay to get the e10 out of my tank, filled it completely up with 95 or 98 cant remember now but its still doing it. I still had a little bit left in the tank when I topped it up I was hopping it would mix with the other fuel and soak up the e10 but now im gettin abit pissed off. Hope I havnt stuffed my engine by puttin that crap in my car. Cheers rick

How long have you had it? The 4.0 give off a ticky sound when accelerating , goes when cruising, is it that sound you maybe hearing?
Pinging sounds a bit like marbles in a tin but quieter
The ticky sound is a bit like a exhaust leak at the manifold, the 4.0 is known for that, extractors shut it up

Gday gypsy, ive had the car for about 6 months, im really happy with it but since I used e10 that dam pinging sound has arrived. I know the sound your talking about yeah I do have a sound like a exhaust leak but its not that im thinking it is a fuel mixing issue because when I put my foot down for a moment it goes away, it happens when I back off then accelerate slightly until I give it more gas, and can I fix that leak noise without buying extractors and I spose while im on here does anyone know how to drain the fuel tank on my old girl v6 4ltr 2006 petrol?? Ive used 2 tanks of e10 since ive had it and only recently and never again.

            Cheers rick

Try cleaning MAF sensor, also could be octane problem, engine ECU will advance engine timing under light load, will retard once you put the boot in. If crank shaft sensor is adjustable check it is adjusted correctly.

gday wes thanks mate i took my air intake manifold off and looked at the throttle valve/gate thingy and it is slightly open is it ment to be like that or is it sposed to be fully closed like every other one i have ever seen, i have always thought it sounded like a loose throat valve but as i am no machanic this is why i ask these questions. I rang a toyota guy and as usual he said bring it up and we will take it for a test drive (yeah and it will cost me more no thanks). im pretty handy around an engine but this has got me stuffed. gunna clean out the MAF sensor soon. take care

just an update on metal sounding noise problem, took the car for a run today and hav'nt heard the noise, i had a feeling that the more good fuel i put through it the better it would get, hopefully it stays away fingers crossed.

Sounds like you ran some watered-down E10: be the same as me putting un-refined cooking fat into the D4D.

Rick how many kms on your car?

Could be exhaust heat shields if the 120 do have them.
Also check if it is not your catalyc converters too. The honeycombe inside could of collapsed and rattling.
