  • Mid-row Seat belts not retracting fully

    Hi all.
First post here though I've read many in the past.

I have an issue with my 2004 Prado middle row seatbelts and wanted to know if I am alone here.

For the last 4 years my daughter has been in a professionally fitted child seat. Not wanting to compromise safety I have never undone the seat belt. I have now just moved her into the booster style seat where she uses the lap-sash seat belt as normal but have found that the seat belt will not retract fully. The last 8-12 inches has to be hand fed back into the body pillar.
Thought this was strange so had it looked at. Blasted the seatbelt and assembly with compressed air to clean out dust, silicone sprayed the belt to lube friction points. Nothing really changed. We pulled the seatbelt out fully and the thing flies back until the last bit, and again goes in slow.
I installed the seat to the other side for now (till I can get it fixed) and the seat belt here is the same.
Can't be normal that both seatbelts, which are barely used, are behaving like this, or are broken.
Is there something else which can be looked at like a simple lubricant applied to the retracting mechanism?

I have the same issue and putting it down to the age of the vehicle. My 3rd row belts is also similar.

    Mine's 2003.

Ours is the same too. Pulled it all apart and cleaned it. Not much difference. Mines a 2004.

Perhaps we can add the year into the info and see if there is some sort of pattern to it or just random.

            Thanks for quick responses guys.

Been on the phone to Toyota today and they are no help. They would like me to come in and pay $140 for them to look at it though.
I have also rung around some other contacts I have in the repair industry and they don't seem to think there is any way of 'servicing' the belt tensioner nor any way of adjusting it. I still find it hard to believe that a ten year old belt tensioner will no longer work.

I have ordered a new one and will get it installed in a week or so, so will see how things go.

Did you happen to get a part number?

Well the retractors still work fine on my 1978 Peugeot 504 with 360000 km on it! But a 1998 Corolla we have also has a slow retractor. I find that a really good clean of the bit on the pillar that the belt runs over helps no end, especially if you spray a bit of Mr Sheen onto the plastic. Other than that I can only suggest pulling it out past the dodgy bit and pushing it back in past that bit a few times but no doubt you have tried that.

No I didn't. I was just told they would order a complete assembly, assuming the belt system is sold as one item.

2004 here and have the same problem mine has had a rough 10 years coming from a station, i put it down to the dust build up.

both sides are not retracting very good at all.

Interested to know a part number and cost also ?

Toyota's prices are double the above. Trade is about 10% cheaper.

                        my 09 is fine.
sounds more like the spring tension recoiler is in need of adjustment or replacment

                          Mr. Sheen.

Spray it on liberally and then wipe excess off with an old towel. Repeat if necessary.

Believe it or not it works.

                            third row seat belts

Just seeing the operation of the 3rd row seatbelts. My seatbelts come out ok but retract 3/4 back than you have to feed them back in.
I replaced it with one from the wreckers today but it operates the same. Both sides do it, it is just a pain when the kids are in the back and they are moving around like kids do. The seat belts come out but do not automatically retract back unless you assist it.

Mine are the same, annoying but they do retract eventually. Just got a put up with it I guess.
