  • warranty issues - a list of faults?

    hi all.
My Prado is coming up to 3 years old in Sept. I was thinking perhaps we should have a section to list all common Prado faults that have been found, etc that could be checked prior to warranty expiring... Then rather than many replies, just a reply to a 'link' if someone knows of the issue and the resolve..
maybe this already exists but i can't seem to find it. Using the heading Common Faults or Warranty... just a thought
    cheers, Rod :P

if your prado has a fault, then take it and see toyota.
different individual vehicles, can develope the same noise, but be a different fix may be required.
if your not sure about your vehicle, ask toyota or ask us.
but to say every prado could has the same fault..
what you think could be a fault, could just be a design feature of toyota.
different dealerships obviously have different technicans, where for like you and me, would go about finding a fault probably differently and
probably come to the same conclusion.
then fix it slightly different, being from different places/different people.
toyota build a good product and back their product.
take it to them for an end of warranty check. it's that easy.
just do it before the last month of the warranty running out,
so if they find something, you both have time to fix it before the warranty runs out.

So long as a fault is identified before the warranty expires, fixing it after is OK (of course within a reasonable timeframe).

        not entirely correct..
the job/repair needs to be started before the warranty date expires.
this doesn't mean you take the vehicle into toyota for a noise (e.g) on the day of expiry and that means it's covered. no no.

What advice have you received along that line?

The legal advice I've received before now and have also applied here provides for the conclusion of warranty repairs subject to a fault being identified and remedy being sought within the stated warranty period. Maybe it's different in NSW.

Clearly you wouldn't take a vehicle into Toyota for any vague noise, rattle etc just before the end of your warranty seeking some warranty claim. However if that noise was coming from a stuffed diff for example there should be no problem taking the vehicle into Toyota on the last day of your warranty period and the fault being fully covered. If Toyota then take 2 weeks to start the repairs that's extraneous.

I think for the number of us that get together and all compare notes and have our little natters that we really can't fault them. I meen at last count there was like 500 active members and what complaints have we really got? Rear diff, back door and body cracks and maybe the propshaft noise or whatever on new ones. Honestly guys, if you could see what goes wrong with all the other junk out there every day of the week and it gets shuffled under the carpet you'd be disgusted.
If you have a complaint with your car, get it checked. If it goes like mine or 98% of the cars on here, just drive it and enjoy it and maintain it and stop worrying about stuff going wrong! Honestly, they are the best by far.

              Extended warranty

Our Prado seems unbreakable. My warranty is about to expire and I am contemplating buying an extended warranty. Lady Di has 55000ks on the clock. Does anybody have experience with the extended warranty,is it worth it and does it cover all the usual stuff?

p.s. We reckon Lady Di lives inside our Sat Nav.
150 Vx D4D, Deluxe Arb bar, winch, Hayman Reece Towbar, UBP, P3 Tekonsha, 'n stuff.
"When cooking on a camp fire it must be cool enough to cook on so it needs to burn down to coals, at least in parts. It is customary to drink beer while waiting for the fire to cool down.
I recommend starting with a very big fire"-Vince.

don't know about Toyota's extended warranty but from experience Holdens is not worth the paper it's written on. Check out the fine print with Holdens for what it actually covered it was just an expensive way for us to keep going to them for services.

If you're worried about a problem you may of missed noticing before your warranty runs out, you could always get a friend to take it to RACQ or NRMA for a pre purchase check. They go over it, see if anything is wrong with it.

I don't get it. If it seems unbreakable, why opt for the extended warranty? It's got good reliability, so stay with it. It might cost you less overall. Besides, 55K is what some owners do in less than 12 months. Hardly run in.

if you had a diff failure/problem (with 1-2 days or 10 months),
i don't think you would be "driving away" from your dealer.
most dealers would keep the car/vehicle and start processing it immediately.

I have wondered if there is a list of things to keep an eye out for. i had a tow truck driver tell me the other day that i should expect the starter motor to die around 100000 (which i'm past) but i don't know if he was just trying to have a go at me because i was video recording my mates Jeep getting put on to the tray....

in the time i've been on here though i haven't heard of any consistent problems coming up...

but there's normally typical things on most cars...

damonat... as I said, the diff was just an example. Pick anything more palatable if you like. I've moved on.

roddy... I agree with most of the above. There's not too much that I would say is 'something common to look out for' with these vehicles and, though rare, the few things that might appear are discussed often in this forum so a browse through would put you in the picture for the most part.

As damonat does kinda suggest, cars be as individual as they can be similar so if you want some further reassurance I'd recommend getting a pre end of warranty inspection done by NRMA or similar. They are very familiar with these kinds of inspections, know what to look for and will provide you with the info required to approach your dealer before your warranty period ends.

                          thanks for the input guys...

1 issue has raised it head.... the clunk when coming to a stop..seems to be happening more and more. Spoke to Stewart Toyota and they say it is simply a grease job and is scheduled on every service. I told him it was only serviced 2000 km ago and doing alreadt. He told me it won't cause any damage and to simply wait until my next service...
not really good enough. Am going there next week to have them look at it now, not in another 8000km.
                          cheers

I've just had my starter motor replaced under the extended warranty @100k kms so I'm happy with that warranty. It's a Nov 03 120 and they can't argue when it's a specific inclusion.

Also had the mouldings around the bottom of the door frame replace twice under the warranty. If you catch them on the way out or kick them hard enough on the way in they break the body clips.

I'm still trying to get them to recognise the common variety tailshaft clunk but my locals won't replace the shaft so I grease it myself every few months or so when it starts to annoy me.

                              Warranty

After carefull reading of the policy I have purchased the extended factory warranty. It covers all the usual stuff and is basically an extension of the factory warranty. You have to keep up with servicing but it can be done by a licensed mechanic not just the Dealer. It wont cover consumables like brake pads, hoses etc.

After reading about rear doors being replaced sometimes four on the same vehicle, I thought well maybe it could turn out to be money well spent. If I do a diff or gearbox or electrical drama I will be covered.

I can see the 55ks soon turning into 150 in the next 12 months.
