  • 2008 Prado High KM's

    Gday

Just purchased a Prado GLX 2008 Turbo Diesel. Been doing some reading up on here about it trying to get to know my new car its quite different to my previous early holdens.

Its got 291k on the clock, its very clean inside and out and from what i know its single previous owner who towed a van around a bit and toured.

its got a service history upto 150k but is only stamped no other info. Seems to run nice, plenty of go and very smooth.

Im keen to hear from others with a Prado that has high kms and issues to look out for? i got a 36m warranty with it from the dealer.

Not sure if its had any mods its got a Safari Snorkel not sure on anything else.

    Cheers - Jamey

    G'day Jamo82

I have a 2003 Prado 120 (Kz engine). It had 64K on the clock when I bought it and it now has travelled 362k. I've had to replace the rocker cover twice (they're plastic). I upgraded the suspension at around 250k as the original had seriously sagged to the extent tyre-fitters advised they found it difficult to adequately do a wheel alignment. At 350k I replaced the head because it was cracked. According to the specialist who did the work and does a lot of Prados for Toyota, cracked heads are not unusual on Prados at around the time mine went. While the head was off he examined piston wear and commented that it was very acceptable showing that I'd kept the maintenance (regular servicing) up to speed. He advised that I could expect at least 500k from the engine with its new head. There is no sign of trouble with the transmission train (automatic) at this stage. We tow a 1700kg van several times a year but don't do much off-road driving. We're very happy with the Prado and have no plans to replace it yet.

    regards Kel

Thanks Kel that brings me so much piece of mind (Knowing that its not a guarantee) Iv found a good mechanic who is trusted by some mates so hoping with my 300k service that he can take a look over everything and let me know if all is good. loving it so far!!

2008 is the 1KD engine, not the 1KZ. (I've got one).
If there's no indication it's been done, or injectors replaced, get an injector feedback test done to see if they're still in spec . They're replaceable items and should really be done every 120,000km. Do an oil change and get them to check the pickup for clogging, but should be alright if it's a 2008. Early D4D's had different injector seals that can cause blow by but should be changed by the 2008 builds.
Check the EGR isn't gummed up and she should be good otherwise it'll need a clean
Some have issues with cracked inner guards after lots of km and corrugations.
Check rear door for cracking around hinges, but should be good.

Plenty of other info on here if you need it . Search ####'s "what's wrong with my injectors thread" if you're worried. It can be scary, but don't be put off. I'm at 130000 currently and no major issues apart from replacing the injectors which I did as a preventative thing

          2007 (dec2006 build) 120KD manual here, just hit 225,000k's.
Injectors replaced at 180,000k's (were still within spec)
Original brake pads changed at 201,000k's and still on original clutch.

Tow 2T + tandem caravan about 5 - 10,000 k's a year for the last 4 years. Only ever problem it has ever had was when the fuel tank sub assembly (octopus looking thing in rear tank) clogged and wouldn't let fuel transfer between tanks. Other than that not had a single problem.

As others have mentioned, keep an eye on feedback readings for injectors, do regular servicing and all should be good for a long time.

Was about to post something similar but thought I'd tack onto this instead.

Am in a similar situation to Jamey except that mine is the 1GRFE with 330km.

Anything different I should be checking for?

Fortunately the suspension, bushes and front wishbones seem to have been done and it all feels pretty good for the km but no doubt with those kind of kms things start to go!
