  • Checking my weights

Decided to revisit my weights so took the vehicle down to the local tip which has weigh scales.

Vehicle: full fuel; fridge, fridge slide; drawers; tools, recovery gear and all of the other stuff one has including a couple of crates with camping gear = 2,550 kg
Passengers: me, wife and daughter = 220kg
Food and water (and wine) = 40 kg
    Clothes in 3 cases = 45 kg
    TOTAL = 2,855

Cub Camper ball weight = 135 kg = so when towing = 2,990 - right on the MUW for the Prado 120.

Fortunately my Cub weighs about 1,500 kg fully loaded so I am within the combined weights of 5,000 kg.

You are 90kg over OGF! 2900 on the 120 2990 ish on the 150. I am assuming your is a 120 due to where this thread is posted? Put your suitcases & food in the camper trailer preferably in the rear of it so it will reduce your GVW and the ball weight as a consequence. On my old camper trailer filling the 97 litre water tank reduced the ballweight by 30kg. I have upgraded the GVM on my 120 to 3090 for this very reason.

Just checked you are quite right. 2900 it is. I currently have 'stuff' in the back like camping gear, plates etc which would normally go in the camper. I can eliminate the water when towing the camper as I use water from the tank in it. Certainly I should be able to put s under the floor as well.

We're in the caravan park at Leinster atm doing laundry and re-stocking after 3 weeks in the scrub. There's another broken Mitsi Triton dual cab with canopy sitting next to a caravan. Poor bugger has Vic plates. The rear tub is at a downward angle compared to the rest of the car. Looks like his holiday is over.

Seen quite a few tritons in that predicament now. Such a long tub sticking out beyond the rear axle and people not knowing how to load the rear is asking for trouble.

At least you weighed it - more than some. I had mine weighed when I had the camper re-registered. Full tank, all recovery gear, bullbar, drawers, cargo barrier, driving lights, awning = 2430kg. I base everything else off that.

Camper ball weight fully loaded ready to go including additional 60L water in jerries on drawbar (120L in total) = 130kg
                Camper ATM = 1200kg

Slightly sadly....yes I've weighed everything.... I have it all in a spreadsheet and just add or subtract quantities to get the load weights

Not exactly a big van sitting alongside it either...

Maybe it had been fatigued from previous trips and this was the last straw? Or they believed the towing capacity figure?

There does seem to be a large amount of Triton representation in the various Bent Chassis posts though.

not sad at all, that's just being careful....helicopter load masters, crewman and pilots have a full spreadsheet called a "weight & balance" spead sheet for a particular helicopter, with weights and locations of all items...and yours is not as complex as that (and doesn't need to be)... and now you have a reference point, you can ensure you have loaded correctly. 130kg drawbar weight is perfect for a 1,200kg trailer, and its amazing how easily all the items can add up....I am certain there are many folk towing who are over the weight limits, and every so often you see the Transport Inspectors on the road side out west with portable scales set up checking vehicles and caravans etc. I just use a local public weighbridge occasionally and will post some of my weights shortly.

In my 120 when I had it, removing the middle and last row of seats took 90 kg out of the car, a handy trick for 15 mins work if you don't need the seats on a trip. Just the back row is about 30 kg.

Sorry for these and so many unfortunate tourers that plan the "Big Trip" then have troubles like this.
See so many Dual cabs loaded up to the gunnels, then some.
Manufactures engineers must be on something to design a potential off road vehicle with large towing capacities and out of proportioned rear axle over hang of tray or tub.
I understand the serve a purpose for many, but to me they ain't a Ute and they ain't a car.
At least the flaps should be effective at stopping the rocks.

I put mine on the scales the other day, it weighs 2420kg with full fuel, me (110kg), my work bag (10kg) , rock sliders and an arb deluxe bar and NO 3rd row and NO other "stuff" in the car.

Ive found this discovery very frightening.

id driven 6 mates (and me) home from the pub the night before and at an average of 100kg per person x6 = 600kg + 2420kg = 3020kg . That's 120kg OVER MY GVM and didn't account for the 3rd rdow of seats, box of beer or the pizzas for the wags.

i could imagine that if id had an accident, id be screwed by the insurance company as my vehicle was over weight and thus illegal.
