  • Scheduled service at Toyota or not?

    Hi guys,
My Prado is nearing up its scheduled service at the end of this month. It has done 7K since new and it will be a 6 months service.
I have done a 5000 service at the non-Toyota place as I was towing my tinny occasionally. I felt that changing oil and a filter (using Toyo genuine parts) is no big deal and any place can do.
Now, it's a 6 months service and I was wondering if I should go to Toyota to do this service or continue with my mechanic. What are your thoughts and experience on having the service book stamped by say, Brighton Toyota or by "Joe's Service Centre" (not the real name) stamp? Does it matter? I trust my mechanic and he serviced all my previous cars, no problems there. I know that if I use genuine Toyota parts, there shouldn't be a problem with warranty, so I am told :?
Or should I forget all of the horror stories that I've read here on this site and give my car to one of the Toyota's "factory trained, highly skilled, experienced, etc. etc" technicians to perform their "exceptional" service on it?
Would the "Joe's Service Centre" stamp in the book somehow affect the future resale value of my car if I decide to sell it?
Thank you all in advance for all of the replies.
    Cheers

Mine gets serviced by Country Diesel here in Alice and there is no way known I would take it to a Toyota dealership unless I knew for certain that they were dependable and exhibited good workmanship.

It is my life on the line if my car breaks down out in the scrub 100's of kms from anywhere. I want to have the knowledge that the people working on my car have pride in their work and have the skills to do it.

With my previous car (Mazda Bravo) I had it serviced by a 3rd party (Ultratune) as the dealer was so far away.
When I showed up for a warranty claim (gearbox and common on Bravos) even though I had the log books up to date and they couldn't back out of the claim, I was made to feel like a prick for doing it and they definately dragged their feet through the whole process. They had the car for 4 weeks all up.

This time around I've paid through the ass for Toyota dealership service (poor service at that) and not had one warranty claim.

      I can't win

I'm driving my 3rd Prado and about to pick up my 4th. NEVER had a problem at a Tojo dealership and the prices have been competitive.

Mine will be serviced at Toyota for the first 60000km anyway as it has the fixed price servicing $180, after that I will see.

Thanks guys for the replies, keep them coming.
I would like to get more of your opinions on a service book stamped by a dealership vs "Smokey Joe's repairs" place stamp.

i get mine serviced at Toyota, same with the Rav we had, no issues what so ever, the first two services were $180(10K) and $190(20k) and they have replaced the tailshaft under warranty.

A bit of a tough one I guess. I used to have my cars serviced by third parties until my missus car had mysterious oil usage problems that 2 mechs couldn't find. In the end it went back to toyo and they found the problem immediately (No sign of where it was going).

I found the the 3rd party mechanics just did changed the oil and filter and nothing else really... Today I picked up my Prado from the toyo dealer to find they even adjusted the hand brake! Yippee!

I'm getting mine serviced at the local Toyota dealership.

Their prices are in the ball park ... not the best prices around but the vehicle is always looked after.

They've also been fantastic with the Toyo Extra Care warranty claims.

                  So I keep going back.

It is a hard decision, it depends on your local tojo dealers record, I will be getting my 10000km service done at Toyota. I do my own oil and filter changes at 5,000km intervals.

I get my 06 TD serviced at local Toyota dealer, to try and keep the dollars down a bit I "negotiated" with their spare parts department - saying that I had bought the car there new, was getting it serviced there etc can I have a box of 10 oil filters for a better price than $47 each! He sold me a box of 10 for $250 and I got trade price on air filter elements and fuel filters. I get 10 ltrs of oil from Autobarn or supercheap when they have their 20% off and I saved around $90 on the 20,000 service. Better in my pocket not theirs.
Wherever you go..there you are, it's just more comfortable getting there in the Prado....

We take the prado to Coffs Harbour Toyota for it's service. The original sales and attutide was far better than Port Macquarie. A 2 1/2 hour drive north, either shop or have time at one of the many beaches while we wait.

The service staff have accommodated our every need. Their knowledge of the pardo is tops. Would recommend them to all.

The oil is changed at 5000k's and the services are carried out as close to the k's as possible. The prado is the best vehicle we have owned.

We get our old petrol Prado serviced at our mechanic's, never had an issue. But he didn't feel 100% confident with the D4D, so we take it to Windsor Toyota. We have 20,000km on the clock now, so it has been serviced there 3 times in total and can't complain about the workmanship or customer service (touching wood now! ) The prices haven't been too bad I don't think. BF changes the oil and filter as close to every other 5,000km as he can otherwise.

i agree 100%. a lot of dealership mechanics have never done anything except servicing, and arnt real good at seeing the big picture.

anyone can change oil and filters.

Call me a cynic, but my feelings are that you could have some issues when it comes down to a significant warranty claim. If you've had the car serviced at the same Toyota dealership on each scheduled service then essentially you've "paid" for a future warranty claim somewhat anyhow. Because you're a paying customer they're more likely to look after you. If you come off the street from a history at Ultratune, my feelings are you wouldn't be as well looked after. As for the knowledge of the Techs, I have my reservations at my dealership but I'm keeping an eagle eye on the vehicle before I take it in and when It comes back. Already found a messy oil spill hidden in the wiring in front of the battery. No biggie but noted.
