  • muddy rear

I have a 120 series Prado and trying to find a way to minimize the amount of mud that gets thrown up onto the rear door. Has anyone come across a workable solution to this? Whenever we travel on gravel roads during or shortly after the rain, we end up with a rear that is covered in red mud.

    Skippi,
I have made a large mud flap to deal with this problem when I tow the camper into dirty or mud circumstances. It serves the purpose that you have in mind but I wouldn't leave it on permanently.

It was made with a gal 50 x50mm fence post from Bunnings, attached to the car via the bolts at the end of the chassis. The rubber was from Clark.

      Just another thought skippi,
I also have a rear air deflector which creates a current of air down the door. I am sure this helps with airborne wet muddy water. Available as a genuine part.water

I also have been finding the same problem but I suspect its caused by the 2" lift - the standard rear mudflaps no longer catch as much

Do you have any further close up pics of your large mud flap, specifically how you have atached the rubber to the 50mm post and how its attached? Also what thickness of rubber did you use?

Do you find it causes any other problems having it on?

        Cheers

I have this thing on mine (came with the car)and believe it does nothing. I can go down a wet dirt road and the back window, door and spare tyre get absolutely covered in a muddy spray.

Extending the mudflaps is probably the best way to go. Another problem will also be the spray that comes out of the sides of the wheelarches and swirls around the back if you get my drift. Maybe need some of those fuzzy things you see on some trucks.

Here some close up pics of the rear mudflat.

The bar across is 50 x50 mm gal fence post. The brackets are L shaped gal brackets bent to suit and welded on. The rubber is attached and a alu strip as backing, bolted right trough with SS bolts. An upper rubber section is attached that extends towards the wheel arch to stop the mud and stones that fly from the wheel arch .

I have to lie under the car to attach it. One bracket goes under the original tiedown loop, the other is above the exhaust pipe, hence the shape of the bracket.

It has been commented that longer mud flat would work. It is true that it stems from the 2" lift exposing more of the tyre, but I haven't anyone who has done an extension. I would be interested to see how it could be done. The Hilux have nice long flaps.

              Hi Martin

I have been looking at doing this mod to mine as when I am towing the CT, the amount of mud that gets sprayed over the front of the trailer is a real pain when you have to set up camp. The other reason I was going to do it was to offer some more protection to the rear window as I think it might prevent stones being thrown up to the trailer and bouncing back to the window, particularly if the flap is very low to the ground.

The rubber you got from Clarks, is it reinforced like conveyor rubber?

                Jacto,
It isn't conveyor belt rubber but it does have webbing inside to strengthen it. It comes in a roll at the desired width, once determined. Conveyor belt would be the bees knees.

One word about putting it close to the ground, if it touches at any time, it will stand up the stones and cause problems for your trailer tyres, or flick them up towards your camper. Mud just needs a wash. Stones take your paint off!!

I am also cutting mine in two places to allow the air to pass through and I am putting a strip of aluminum along the bottom to stop chipping.

                  Hi all

As another alternative.. Saw these at the Penrith 4wd show this past weekend.

Bit up there on $$$ (~360-400), but another option.

                  Cheers
