I could live with the problems if the Toyota service was up to their advertised standard. To be honest the service manager today was just rude, I contacted their main branch this afternoon to try and book in the car to get the warranty work done and was treated a lot better but the news was not so great. Seems these problems require the car to be off the road for maybe 5 days, they were not very impressed by the service managers response at the toyota place I went to today and I know they were going to ring him to get some answers. To be fair I have always had good service from the main dealership going back to 1989 when I bought a new car from them. I think this service manager down here just did not want to be at work today and was taking his gripe out on the customers.

However toyotas claim of unbreakable is looking pretty flimsy at the moment.

Gees Mav how much more can go wrong? doesn't give people a ring of confidence in these cars if we keep hearing about these things. Hope they don't drag their feet and fix your rig quick smart.

Have you eyeballed these faults yourself? Maybe it's an incorrect diagnosis? Rear main is a big one and means transmission out...

I'd be a bit sus about "Turbo leaking oil internally" ... how did the Toyota Goons pick that one during a standard service??

Have you looked underneath and eyeballed the other leaks yourself?

Well I am not a qualified mechanic and I do expect if these are picked up during a service that they are real faults. I have not eyeballed the leaks myself but I have sort the opinion of the main dealership service department who also found it hard to believe. They were going to ring the satellite dealership service dept and get the low down on it but as yet I have not heard back from them. It is booked in for the warranty work at the main dealership on the 5th. They asked me if the car had had an engine and under body degrease and clean during its service, I told them that it looked like it had not had one. They were not impressed with that either and were going to be speaking to the service manager about the poor customer service.

I had a look under the hood but to be honest I would not know where to look to see the turbo problem. The main dealership service already said that to fix the main oil seal it would mean dropping the transmission. All up they reckon if the faults are real then it would be off the road for about 5 days cause the turbo gets taken off and sent away to be repaired that can take 4 or 5 days they said.

                Mav,

Absolute bummer mate. You really have had a bad run with your car. Lets all hope that this is the end of your problems with it. Toyota service can vary widely in their responses to faults. I have stoppped going to my local dealer for that reason. I do not envy you having to travel Adelaide for servicing as I know that they are boring and lonely to travel on. Hope it all works out for you, Gretta and I are thinking of you and your family.
                Regards,

There wouldn't be anything to see looking at the turbo, but I think you'd notice the smoke out the exhaust!!!... Mind you with these new variable vane turbos maybe there's some other place they can leak.

The main dealership service already said that to fix the main oil seal it would mean dropping the transmission
Yeah that's right...$5 oil seal but a long days labour!!

Good luck with it... hopefully that's the end of your rotton run of luck.

It's funny how it is with cars... we have had ours just turned three years now and not one issue and it's done a lot of off road k's too.(except a wobbly bonnet which I fixed myself, simple catch adjustment and a broken shock which was an ARB one)

Like I said, I hope it's all good from here on in....

                    Re: Quality service from Toyota

Well I am taking the Prado into the main dealership sevice dept on Monday so they can do a thorough check on the car, they said that they will take me along with the mechanic to see if there really is any faults. They reckon that if the turbo really does have a fault then it could be more than 5 days off the road at this time of year. Fingers crossed that it goes well on Monday.

Or just make a mental note and take a photo as soon as they have finished. Sure, they might not want to be in the picture pointing to a particular spot, but nothing to prevent you from taking a photo of your own car!

Had the 120000k service done at Toyota dealer, had ALL oils changed (diff, transfer case, engine, gearbox etc), towed the caravan 1800 klms to QLD in the rain, then. on way home only got down to Gold Coast and noticed pink/red oil all over the front of van.
Couldnt get it checked on coast so got to Ballina and put on hoist.
Removed gearbox plug and oil poured out !! OVERFULL by heaps and that was after leaking all the way to QLD.
Noticed / smelt gear oil on transfer case, removed fill plug, and oil ed out of there pissed out of there as well. Oil was leaking from around transfer case to g/box flange, had gone past seals.

The same dealer did the 40000k service and left the diff drain plug loose and it leaked all the way to QLD 2 years previously !
80000K service done by different dealer in another town and they left the cover plate off motor drain area..

Where the f.... do you take a TOYOTA vehicle to get serviced correctly ???????

Note........ the valves have never been checked either 40 k, 80 k, 120 k, "we only listen to them "

It isn't just Toyota. 100% of the time that I have let a "professional" touch my car I have had problems! Without exception!
                                Here is my latest story:
Took my Prado to one of F------ Suspensions outlets here in Brisbane to get Kings springs and Bilstein shocks fitted to front. They fitted incorrect and very thin washers to under lower rubber bushes at top of shocks. Result - washers slide down shock shafts which then try to puncture guards from underneath. Problem found whilst travelling through Ballina. After visit to their Ballina agent, we decided to drive vehicle back to Brisbane. After much apologising, they fixed this problem but whilst doing so left one of the sway bar links undone (they apparently undo one end to facilitate spring removal). Again, whilst travelling, this time through Coffs Harbour, loose link swung around, ripped CV boot apart and fell off the car. Luckily I heard a noise and stopped. Saw that hot runny grease had covered the inner front passenger's side wheel, brake disc, caliper and pads. After another less than cordial call to Brisbane, it was organised that vehicle be repaired at their Coffs Harbour agent. I was getting to know their agents quite well!
The nett result is that my vehicle is now roadworthy again and I did receive lots of apologies from the General Manager as well as a refund of my accommodation costs in Coffs Harbour. BUT how can a "professional" organisation make two serious and potentially vehicle crippling if not life threatening errors to the one vehicle. The laws of logic dictate that my incidents cannot be the only ones.
I pity those people who have to rely on "professional" mechanics who charge very professional rates!
Incidentally, for those who ask "why front only?" Because I can do the rear myself!

                                Cheers - John
